The October Challenge will have the theme "Think Outside the Box!"  Your story for this challenge should be "against your type": if you normally write fluff, write angst; if you normally write Hobbits, try Elves or Dwarves.  Or, if you write mostly dialogue, write an entirely descriptive piece.  Elements for the challenge will be three random words to be included in the story.

The October challenge stories will be due Friday, October 14th, and will be revealed on Sunday, October 16th. Please tag your story "outside the box". Please remember to use the header template on the community profile page, and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line.

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at aelfwina@gmail.com, virginia_lee_redcat@yahoo.com, or celeritassagittae@gmail.com.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our October challenge!

Hi! The challenges for LotR GFIC have a twist on them--all the stories have to fit a certain theme (in this case, write something you normally wouldn't), but each participant also receives an individual element that she or he has to work into the story (in this case, three words have to be in the text of your tale).

In order to get your element, you'll need to send me your email address: either by PM or else through my email (celeritassagittae@gmail.com). If you have any further questions, feel free to ask them there, and I'll get back to you.

Thanks for your interest!

write something you normally wouldn't

I have not written before so does not really apply to me.
I have written in two other fandoms, but not LOTR although have read considerable amount of ff dedicated to LOTR.......

All right, I've sent you our standard form letter with elements.

Since you haven't written LotR fanfic before, personally, I'd think that's quite "outside the box" as it is!

I'll also suggest, though, that you could try to focus on doing something "outside the box" stylistically--by which I mean, if you write plot-centric pieces, write an introspective vignette in which nothing happens. The "angst vs. fluff" and "dialogue vs. description" divides in the main post would also work for that. Length could work, too--I tend to write novels or long short stories, so if I did a 100-word piece, that would count. Or writing poetry instead of prose, etc. There are a lot of ways to stretch the prompt, and fortunately, what is "outside the box" is ultimately determined by you!

I'll reiterate, though, I think writing LotR fic will qualify on its own for you, if you want to do that.

Well, it's up to your interpretation... anything from whatever your "style" is to a different corner of the fandom (Second Age Numenor, etc.) to a different genre (has anyone done noir for Middle-earth, I wonder?).

Anyway, I've sent out your prompt.

Got it! Thanks. Haven't tried second age. Fourth age has pretty much been my specialty, but I took a big dip into first age recently. Hmmm........

Well, this could be interesting. Send me a prompt, I'll see if it is a challenge that I can meet when I see what you've assigned me :-)
