Title: I Espy with My Great Eye

Rating: G

Inspiration: Sauron, greatest and most terrible of the servants of Morgoth...took Minas Tirith by assault, for a dark cloud of fear fell upon those that defended it; and Orodreth was driven out, and fled to Nargothrond. Then Sauron made it into a watchtower for Morgoth, a stronghold of evil, and a menace; and the fair isle of Tol Sirion became accursed, and it was called Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves. No living creature could pass through that vale that Sauron did not espy from the tower where he sat.

~~ Chapter 18, "Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin," The Silmarillion

Media: Corel Paint 11 and Wacom Intuos4 Medium pad

Artist's Notes: Thanks to nelyo_russandol for the prompt and the rest of the inspiration :^). Professor Thû (a.k.a. Sauron) appears courtesy of Gothmog and Draugluin.

Maciek Wygnanski's excellent work inspires Tol-in-Gaurhoth here. My apologies for the desecration!

BWAHAHAHA! Oh heavens, I've never seen that quote before but it's perfect, LOLOL!

(I love the teensy touches of color!)

Heh. Thanks! The Dark Muse informed me that he thinks the title is lame, so I'll be changing it in a minute or two.

Corel Paint and that fancy tablet are pearls before the swine (that is, to say, me, who really has no idea how to use the technology's full capabilities), but adding the bits of color is fun. :^)

This series is wonderful. Don't know where to start. I think that not nearly enough has been written based upon the canon source: "...took Minas Tirith by assault, for a dark cloud of fear fell upon those that defended it; and Orodreth was driven out, and fled to Nargothrond." (It's just kind of skipped over in most people's stories about Orodreth, the way a short-lived job that doesn't work out gets left off a revised resume.) I must admit your vision of Orodreth being driven out is unique. I can see that happening though. Everything he could salvage fits in a VW bug. (I can imagine a new outcome for Orodreth now in my fluffy world of happy endings: he doesn't stick around to lose Nargothrond as well, but painted the Beetle and is now happily driving a taxi in Mexico City.)

Love the use of the inspiration for the castle and all of the small details. I have such a crush on Dr. Thû and I love his cheery little minion.

Ah HAHAHAHAHAHA! That would be a funny sidebar of your Elves in Manhattan series! Maitimo and Káno visit Mexico City and...

Thanks! I have a feeling that minion is going to make a reappearance.

Fantástico. Talk about literal interpretations of canon... ;o)

Orodreth would drive a Beetle, yes. Nothing fancy, dead standard, probably an early 70s model. Second hand, hence the colour.

I'm sure Orodreth's Beetle is Finrod's cast-off. The Hewer of Caves no doubt dinged up the vehicle badly whilst driving madly about with Beren and crew on ill-fated road trips. Hence the need for the canary yellow paint job at the Bay of Balar Body Shop.

Hee. Now that's not how I envisioned this particular scene. In fact, I never really envisioned it at all, just made yet another mental "Orodreth is boring" note. I love this! Also the fact that somehow Sauron notating every creature's every move all the time is somehow more mentally scarring than just imagining him as this locally omniscient(?!) cloud of evil.

Heh. Yes, he takes note of every creature, deer ticks, chipmunks, and all.

Thanks!

Yes, yes! I have a complete draft of our next chapter on the hard drive of iLugbúrz. Contained therein is much handwringing on the part of Mr. Sauron, who reveals a very human side of himself to his correspondent, and Bilbo's stunned response. ;^) Should be published soon.

For some reason it's rather perfect that it's a yellow beatle, too. :-)

Feb. 9th, 2012 01:00 am (UTC)
Ha! Yes, I suppose yellow might be an appropriate color, although my Dark Muse notes that fleeing was probably prudent. "Had he stayed, I would have flayed him alive and then made him watch 36 uninterrupted hours of 'Balar Shore.*'"

*Apparently the Beleriandic equivalent of 'Jersey Shore.' ;^)

My apologies for the late response, Bonnie! Thanks very much, and glad to know you got a chuckle out of this!

Professor Thû and his minion will be appearing in a number of forthcoming "Gothmog and Draugluin" cartoons in the SWG monthly newsletter for a series I have tentatively titled: "Finron and Beren's Excellent Adventure." ;^)
