Blessings of the Day

Arwen greeted the dawn in her private garden. She heard the watch man call out as a ship pulled closer to the city's broad wharf. Gondor was awakening as she began the return to her chambers.

"Blessin's o' the day, highness," the gardener said, holding a potted wild rose out to her. Confused, Arwen graciously accepted the plant and thanked him, leaving the garden.

"Blessin' o' the day, m'lady," the scullery maid crossing the kitchen hallway blurted out, bobbing a quick curtsey as Arwen nodded and continued walking.

Tendrils of steam rose from her bath water. "Blessings of the day, majesty," her handmaiden said as she curtsied. "Mistress Éowyn sent some skin cream for you."

Arwen thanked her, admiring the distinctive stoneware made by the Princess of Ithilien.

Refreshed by her bath, she entered the larger family room. Aragorn and Eldarion were playing with miniature troops at the hearth. Several wrapped packages were near Arwen's table setting.

"Happy birthday, Maman," Eldarion crowed as he ran to her.

"But elves do not celebrate birthdays, Eldarion."

"Papa said that. But everyone should have a birthday, even elves," the small boy said firmly.

"He was determined, so we decided today we would celebrate your birthday," Aragorn explained. "We're having a small dinner for friends and family tonight. I believe Imrahil just docked, and there are visitors awaiting you in the next chamber."

Arwen opened the door to Aragorn's chamber and her eyes went wide. "Brothers?" she gasped, and was quickly enveloped in twin embraces from two she saw too rarely.

"Blessings on your day, sister," two baritone voices sounded.

Years later on Ceren Amroth, she clung to the memory of the love surrounding her that had become so vivid to her on that first birthday celebration many years earlier.

Thanks so much. I'm not sure if I fulfilled the prompt, 'Gratitude,' but I gave it a good shot :-) My original mind image of this, Eldarion handing his mother a wilted bouquet of wild flowers, never even made the final cut - LOL.

Thank you. I loved the way that both Dreamflower and I ended up writing stories about birthdays for the Gratitude prompt :-) I'm sure that looking back on the love she had experienced would give her strength to go ahead and finally take that last step into the unknown.

That's so sweet! I love Eldarion's generous idea--and I wish you could have shown him giving her flowers like a little hobbit faunt!

As much as I tried to work it in, my mental Arwen kept shying away from cut flowers and wanting growing ones, no matter who was holding the bouquet. Thus, much easier to have the idea be Eldarion's and the flower come from her gardener.

I like it that Arwen got to have her own birthday celebration. It was thoughtful of her son to give her one.

I think it is one of those things that is celebrated among men, but maybe not so much among those who are basically immortal. Eldarion saw a gap and moved to fill it, even at his young age. I loved his generous spirit.

Thanks so much for your comments :-)

I'm not sure how old Eldarion is here, but as well as a very sweet gesture, it saves Aragorn having to explain already to his son what Elves celebrate when they celebrate their begetting day *g*

Joking aside, it's a lovely story

That was so incredibly sweet. Loved the people of the palace, little Eldarion, and at the end, the twins. It ends in a bittersweet note that gives it depth. I'm so glad she had this day (and many others, henceforth, I would guess).

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. I'm delighted that you enjoyed my take on "gratitude" and the idea of Arwen getting a birthday she never realized she had been missing.
