In Praise of Food

A Hobbit's Passion

Sliced thin and stirred in butter;
or dropped into stew;
dipped in batter, crisply fried;
minced, and spread on toast;
eaten raw and wild;
mushrooms are my
delight!

Memory from an Adventure

Dripping with sticky goodness,
sweet, warm and golden
with the treasure of the bees
baked in yeasty treats,
Beorn's own secret:
Honeycakes--
Yum!

Sam's Specialty

From river to frying pan:
Battered, sizzling, hot,
Joined by earth's fruit,
Potatoes turn crisp.
Plate them nicely,
Fish and chips--
Wow!

Epulaeryu poems are brand new to me! I especially like the one about mushrooms, but they all have me feeling hungry.

Originally the only one I was going to do was the mushrooms, but it was so much fun I couldn't resist doing more!

Are we sure hobbits didn't *invent* this form of poetry, dear Dreamflower? Because it just seems the sort of lyrical venture they'd come up with out of whole cloth...tablecloth, that is *stifles giggles*

I adore all of these! I'm not sure if I have a favorite, but I'd say it'd probably be Sam's if I did, just because I like the "earth's fruit" image of his beloved taters. :)

I can imagine hobbits inventing a poetic form especially for food!

Your poems conjured up lovely images in my mind which led to a Pavlov's dog-like reaction so I think I really need to get started on dinner now!

LOL! I do enjoy writing about food. For some reason lots of my readers tell me that reading my stuff makes them hungry! :^)

Hmm! Most interesting form, and perfect for these three offerings! Mushrooms, honeycakes, fish and chips--yes, perfect for our Hobbits!

It really is a fun form to work with! I'm usually not that crazy about syllabic based poetry, preferring either rhyme and meter or word-count poems. But these work very nicely, giving plenty of scope within the form to write mouth-watering images.

Yes, indeed: mushrooms, honeycakes, and fish and chips!

I was tempted to add recipes, but refrained. I've already written loads of mushroom recipes, and the honeycakes. Not fish and chips yet, though...

These are delightful! So fun and mouthwatering. Epulaeryu might have been invented for Hobbits or by Hobbits. :)

I don't know about the mushrooms, but I would love the fish and chips (with hush puppies and tartar sauce) and the honeycakes! =)

Fish and chips, hush puppies, but I like lemon juice or vinegar with my fish and chips.

Mushrooms are delightful!

Very hobbit-like indeed!
Nobody could say no to these!
(Except Gollum, poor thing!)

Poor Gollum! I think he has the ultimate paleo diet: raw fish and meat, but no Elf food.
