Title: How Does Your Garden Grow?
Rating: G
Theme: Pairs
Elements: Rich, poor
Beta: None
Summary: Sam and Frodo discuss the garden
Word Count: 100

Sam let the soil dribble between his fingers. It was damp and some of it stuck rather than falling back to the ground. But it was enough to tell him what he needed to know.

"This is rich soil, Mr Frodo," he said to the hobbit watching him.

"That's good, isn't it?"

Sam nodded. "It was too poor to grow much before. But now I can grow any vegetables you want."

Frodo thought about that for a minute. "I don't know, Sam. What do you think is best?"

Sam smiled and told his master his plans for Bag End's garden.

Yes, rich and the poor apply to soil as well as to individuals, not that either was poor in spirit! Good drabble.

Thank you. I think neither of them were poor at all, except for technically in Sam's case.

Sam's plans -- I like that! Sam's plans and Sam's garden. Lovely!

Thanks. With Sam having done all the work it would feel like his garden.

Nice! That's a really interesting use of your elements. Both in the context of the garden's soil and the layered relationship between Frodo and Sam.

Frodo trusts Sam the way Bilbo trusted Hamfast. This is a nice use of those prompts.

I think what I like most about this drabble is the way that Sam asks Frodo what he wants for the garden, and then Frodo turns around and lets him do the planning. I think it really characterizes the class-based part of their relationship.

Thanks. It's really interesting how class works in the Shire and it applies to Frodo and Sam's relationship.

I love this use of "rich, poor". Very nicely done! I love what this shows about Sam's relationship with Frodo, the confidence Sam has in his master, the trust Frodo has for his gardener.

As others have said, my favorite part of this drabble was Frodo deferring to Sam in the matter of what to put in the garden. I also like the idea that the soil was once poor and has since been made rich. It's a hopeful note considering who is doing the discussing.

Thanks. I was going for multi-layered with it.

That's a very imaginative use of the prompts, and the little scene left me smiling. It has a wonderfully content feeling to it.
