2011 January Potluck Challenge!

Yes, indeed!

Once again we are having Potluck for the New Year! Behind the cut are the themes and unclaimed elements for eight months of 2010. (January and December are not included, as January is always "potluck" and December is always the Exchange, and we had no leftovers in May and June). If you would like to participate in the January Challenge, look through the elements posted, and choose one. Comment to this post with the number of the prompt you have chosen, and I will strike it from the list. For April, simply comment if you wish to submit an essay; for July, you do not need to choose a prompt-- just follow the instructions for that month. This is your chance to take part in a challenge you missed. Also, if you claimed a prompt for any month last year and did not finish your story in time, you may enter that instead. The list of prompts and monthly themes is behind the cut.

The February Challenge had the theme "Send It In a Letter". Stories should either be written as a letter or contain a letter as a major part of the story. The element for the challenge will be a type of letter (e.g. "love letter"; "business letter"; "letter of recommendation"; etc).

1. A love letter
2, A business letter
3. A letter announcing an important occasion
4. A legal summons
5. A poison pen letter

The March Challenge had the theme "Mad as a March Hare". Stories should include a character who seems "mad" or is acting strangely or out-of-character-- for a reason! Your element will be a type of weather, which you will include in the story.

6. Cold and rainy
7. Warm and rainy
8. Hot and humid
9. Blizzard
10. Hail

Our April 2010 challenge was a non-fiction challenge. And since thoughtful non-fiction essays and research on all things Tolkien are always to be welcomed, we would like to invite you to submit a non-fiction piece as your entry to the April Challenge.

We will assign no theme or element-- write your essay or research or informative article on whatever topic you choose. We ask only that it be focused on Tolkien or his world, and not merely a rant of likes or dislikes.

(If you started an essay for last April and did not get it finished, this would be a wonderful time to do so! If you choose to do a non-fiction essay for the potluck, no need to claim a number, but we'd appreciate a comment below letting us know about it.)

There were no leftover prompts from May.

There were no leftover prompts from June.

The July Challenge was a repeat of our popular Fixed-Length-Ficlet Challenge! the Theme will be "Short and Sweet", and all the stories will be Fixed-Length Ficlets. Participants chose a number between 101 and 400. Interested authors can reply to this announcement and claim a number. Whatever number you choose will be the word count for your ficlet-- if you choose 237 your story must have exactly 237 words! (Just say "July" in your comment, and your number between 101 and 400.)

The August Challenge will have the theme "Two Sides to Everything". Stories should include an argument, debate or disagreement between two characters. The element for the challenge will be the topic of the debate.

11. How does one choose which duty, if one has two conflicting duties of equal importance?
12. Does an oath actually strengthen one's resolve?
13. Was Eowyn a deserter for not remaining with her people in Dunharrow?

The September Challenge will have the theme "Back to School". Stories should deal in some way with education, whether in a formal or informal manner. Elements for the challenge will be a subject of study, such as reading, arithmetic, history, music, etc., and participants should include at least a mention of their element within the story.

14. Languages
15.Biology/Anatomy (human or animal)
16. Ettiquette
17. Music
18. Dance
19. Physical education (this could include learning something that would be considered a sport, or could also include physical activities such as swimming)
20. Martial art (hand-to-hand combat, swordfighting, archery, etc.; could also include military strategy)
21. Household skill (sewing, cooking, taking care of household items, etc.)
22. Wilderness skill (tracking, hunting, foraging, trapping, fishing, etc.)
23. Husbandry (skills involved in farming)

The October Challenge will have the theme "Believe It or Not". Stories should contain something supernatural or unbelievable. The prompt for the challenge will be an adjective that will be used in the story. The adjective will be a word conveying a certain mood.

24. dark
25. unreal
26. misty --
27. foggy --
28. glowing --
29. scary --

The Challenge for November was “true drabbles” of exactly 100 words with the theme “Pairs”. Elements were two words that seem to “go together” in a pair, for example, "black, white" or "night, day" which were to be used in the drabble.

I'd love to do an essay. I have an idea I started to work on last night, and I think this will give me the motivation to finish it. Hopefully. :-)

Not that it would matter if someone else wrote one, but I did a 'brother, sister' story in November. I even got it submitted on time! :D

IF I can find my notes I may finish my essay. I had lots of notes but ran into a snag and never got it worked out. *scans room for notes' secret hiding place*

Jan. 5th, 2011 06:31 am (UTC)
I remember that! I must have missed checking the prompt off when I was copy/pasting the list. I'll do that now!

And another essay! Yay!!
Jan. 4th, 2011 06:57 pm (UTC)
Are you able to choose more than one? I'd like to do a love letter too if I can. That was actually what I was secretly hoping for when I did my first challenge - now almost a year ago! How scarcy is that?

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
