"I've picked you these."

Boromir looked dubiously at the handful of flowers his brother held out. Their mother had often had flowers around to brighten up the place, and Faramir had taken that duty upon himself, and kept it up too. But this was the first time he'd picked them for someone, as far as Boromir knew.

"You can give them to Aerliniel," Faramir added, when Boromir didn't take them.

Boromir blinked. "How do you know about her?" He hadn't spoken of her to anyone for fear that Denethor would hear and keep them apart. Boromir knew she wasn't suitable to be the wife of the Steward but he didn't care.

"I've been watching you," Faramir admitted. "And her. She likes you too."

"Yes," he said. "I know." Now he was worried. If Faramir had been able to discern what was happening merely by looking, who else might also have noticed?

Faramir frowned. "She likes violets." He stretched his arm out and held them a little closer to Boromir.

Boromir wondered how his brother came to know more about Aerliniel than he did. "I'll take them to her. And then you and I are going to talk about spying on people." He'd been on his way to see her anyway and he was sure she would appreciate the flowers. Of course, he wouldn't tell her his younger brother picked them. He turned to go, but stopped when Faramir spoke again.

"When you come back will you go with me to the library?"

He frowned and turned back to face Faramir. "Why?"

"Father said I could only go if you went with me."

Now Boromir understood the flowers. His brother was more devious than he thought - he'd have to make sure to keep an eye on him. He hated to give up an afternoon spent in Aerliniel's company, but one look at Faramir's hopeful expression told him there were more important people to spend the afternoon with. "Of course," he said, smiling at his brother.

He knew why their father had come up with condition - it was because he didn't want Faramir to visit the library and knew Boromir would be busy. He could intercede on Faramir's behalf, except he had tried before and knew it didn't always work. Besides, this would give Boromir the opportunity to find out what Faramir was up to. So he added, "As long as you tell me everything you know about Aerliniel."

"I will," Faramir said earnestly and smiled.

Boromir smiled back and clapped Faramir on the shoulder. "One day you'll be the death of me," he muttered.

This is a heartwarming scene between these two brothers. How Faramir must have mourned the loss of Boromir.

Thank you.

Ah, this is sweet! I like to think that Faramir would have offered the flowers to Boromir without the ulterior motive, but his desire to go to the library would certainly be a strong one! I like it that Boromir realizes that his brother is more important than his sweetheart.

The last sentence is a bit sobering, with what we know of Boromir's future and how his brother is tied to it! :-(

Thank you. I'm sure Faramir would have offered them anyway, if only to be helpful in Boromir's courting.

Oh, I love this! Both father and younger brother are devious in their own ways, and Boromir must be so also in order to keep up with the two of them! Heh!

Thank you. They're a devious family :)

This was sweet! It reminded me of my friend Susana's Faramir...he's just as devious.

That last line touched me so much, and made me shiver, as well.

I loved it! What I loved most was the many-layered approach, because it reminded me of Denethor. Lin said that she hoped Faramir would have given the flowers without the other motive, but I think Faramir is acting every inch his father's son here, and I love him for it. (I'm a big Denethor fangirl, so that's a complement in my mind.) And just because Faramir has other motives, doesn't mean the gesture wasn't well meant. A very fun little piece.

Thank you. Faramir's got to have inherited or learnt something from being Denethor's son and at the very least, I like the idea that he knows how to get Boromir to do what Faramir wants him to do.

This was really cute in a devious way. Obviously Denethor's sons have been amply educated in negotiation methods. I loved that Boromir was willing to bend to Faramir's request as long as he also got something out of the afternoon in the library, an area that Boromir wouldn't normally spend a great deal of time in.

Thank you. I'm sure they'd have had to learnt to be good negotiators, even at a young age.

This was a lovely piece of interaction between these two! I like the idea that Faramir is happy to facilitate Boromir's pursuit of a girl-- but that he is also going to get something out of it as well. And I also like the idea that Boromir is perfectly well aware of that and doesn't mind accommodating him. It's very much a "guy" type of conversation!

Thank you. I quite like the idea that Faramir gets something out of Boromir spending his time with a girl :)

I love this sweet story! What a nice tribute to brotherly love and glad that Boromir is willing to sacrifice time with a sweetheart to be with his brother and even more that he is finding a way around Denethor to make Faramir happy. :) *hugs them*

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
