Art: Sauron and Huan by Huinárë

Artist: Huinárë
Title:  Sauron and Huan
Rating: G
Inspiration:  ‘Now Sauron knew well, as did all in that land, the fate that was decreed for the hound of Valinor, and it came into his thought that he himself would accomplish it.  Therefore he took upon himself the form of a werewolf, and made himself the mightiest that had yet walked the world; and he came forth to win the passage of the bridge.’  -Sil ch 8.
Media: Humble ballpoint pen
Artist's Notes:  I modeled Huan on a Scottish deerhound, though he resembles a saluki too now that I think about it.  I envision werewolves as basically regular wolves (though more powerful and intelligent); thus wolf!Sauron’s horror must be assumed to be intangible, though I did endeavor to convey something of it through their respective postures.
Apologies for the not-as-sharp-as-it-could-be quality.  The original is sharper and larger, but I’ve only recently attempted to reacquaint myself with scanners after ten years of estrangement.

Oh they look great! You capture their canine qualities so well!

Thank you! The fact that Maiar could assume animal forms, and the possible psychological ramifications thereof, is of continued fascination to me.

You have put so many characteristics in both: the haughty and smug Sauron and Huan - brave Hound - in the defensive position with a 'bring it on' pose. Love it!

Thanks =) Smug is precisely what I was trying to convey in Sauron...that won't last long, unfortunately for him.

Love the self-assured pose of Majestic!Werewolf-Sauron! Likewise, I favor the conceptualization of Huan as Scottish deerhound or Irish wolfhound (one of those big Celtic hunting hounds at any rate). Also, it's very neat that you've captured a lot of canine behavior in that nicely executed rendering!

Thank you! It seems that my years of researching the taxonomy and behavior of the Carnivora half-my-lifetime ago has finally had some kind of real-world application.

That wolf looks like Sauron. Definitely! And he seems the most worried of the two, Huan looks to be confident of victory. Nice artwork!

That wolf looks like Sauron.

Yay, I'm pleased you think so.

(And he's actually not worried yet, and in fact doesn't seem to think Huan is even worth baring fangs over, but that will change soon enough, sadly for him!)

Oh, I love this! I've been owned by Scottish deerhounds for well over 30 years and so I am utterly delighted that Huan is based on one. That's how I've always imagined him in my mind.

Thank you, this comment brightened my evening! Glad my image of Huan is shared by others. I started trying to envision him for this project, and began trying to picture a breed that looked daunting, graceful, and sweet all at once. Before this, Huan was just a random indistinct impression in my imagination and I needed to change that.

The images here particularly helped me. Especially the one at the very top right with the flower <3, though one can't tell from Huan's expression here.

Lovely! Wolf-Sauron looks very sure of himself, and Huan is sooo going to clean his wolfy clock.

I've always thought of Huan as a dog, though a very special and magical dog, not a Maia; and looking like a humongous Great Dane, but a Scottish Deerhound would work well, or a Borzoi or Irish Wolfhound.

Thank you. =D

(Speaking of wolves, great icon. And Raksha was always my favorite character in The Jungle Book.)

Yes, Huan definitely seems like some sort of tall, lean dog to me. I can't remember which artist it was--Nasmith?--who portrays Lúthien riding what looks like a coonhound mix or something, and that never meshed with me. I was also considering Irish Wolfhounds and Borzoi when trying to figure out Huan.

Oh, an Irish wolfhound would be perfect in my view. Love the response to the passage from the Sil! My own miniature wolf-dog is impressed, too. He tried to attack the computer screen! Heh!

Hah, I ought to show your dog the actual picture as drawn, which is significantly larger (each character is on his own landscape-oriented letter sized page). Thanks for your comment!
