I warned you that I would be late with my contribution for the January art challenge.  But I finally had some time to get this done.

The sentence I chose to illustrate was:
"Then Feanor laughed..., and he cried: '...Let the ships burn!'  Then Maedhros alone stood aside, but Feanor caused fire to be set to the white ships of the Telari."  - The Silmarillion

Oh, that's amazing! I love the contrast between the figures and the burning boats, and Maedhros' "apartness"!

You're very kind. I wasn't all that happy with it all together and may revisit this sometime in the future. I am pleased that it worked for you though, and apologize again for the delay in my posting it.

What material did you use for this? It has the feel of chalk on a blackboard, but I don't think that's it. The poses of the 8 are very intriguing :) It makes you wonder who might be standing next to who. And so many other details, the oars in the water, the reflection of the water upon the water oppossed to the play the wind has with the flames and... *rattles on*

It's actually using my black drawing tablet (6 inch x 9 inch) with my silver pen for the outlines and acrylic paints for the flames accented with some gold penwork. I was tempted to put some of the stars in the sky and on the water, but not this time. The only absolute is Maedhros on the far right. Feanor is standing alone in the center. The others are up to personal interpretation. I'm delighted that you like this.

That's wonderful - I could sit and stare at it for hours, I think.

Thank you, Linda. There certainly wasn't anything shy about the burning. I appreciate your words :-)

Whoa. Brilliant execution! This looks like it could be a big imposing wall mural with life-sized outlines.
Feb. 2nd, 2012 10:40 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much. It's really only 6 inches x 9 inches, so not very large at all :-)

Oh wow, this is absolutely gorgeous! Such an original idea, too. I love it!

Thank you. When the challenge was issued, I knew immediately what I wanted to do, but I had to finish some other projects and commitments first before I could work on it. I appreciate your kind words.

That's gorgeous! Especially like the flames and how they are reflected on the water.

Oh, I really love this orange/black combination! :) I think it's great that you left everything in black, except for the ships.

Thanks, Ellynn. It was a wonderful excuse to use my black sketch pad - I don't get a lot of call to use that color :-)

Oh wow! You hardly ever see a depiction of this scene that takes account of the darkness and you've made it really work for you, here!

Thank you, Himring. Although it was tempting to put highlights, etc into clothing, as you said, it was dark. I'm so pleased that you liked this small effort of mine :-)

I really like this. The fire and the reflection of the flames in the water. It's great.

Well, you now know how the picture struck me! I'd started a picture of Denethor's hands holding the Palantir, but never completed it. Now I just might finish it for next year's potluck!

I am truly thrilled and honored by having you choose this for your Eye of the Beholder fic. *hugs*

This is lovely, and reminds me of the figures on ancient Greek amphorae in composition and style.
