Yule Fics!

Hi everyone!

We'll be posting the Yule Challenge Fics throughout the day because there are so many and we need to have time to check formatting, etc. Thank you all for participating and we hope you have had fun and enjoy reading all the stories!!!

Title: Season of Hope

Recipient: Kaylee

Request: What I would like: a story about an Elven family celebrating Yule (no preference on which Elves, I love them all) It would be nice if the Valar and/or Maiar (or Istari) could be included in some way, but the Elves don't have to be Amaneldi...even mentions of the Valar or Maiar in traditions by Sindar would work. No preference on Age or realm. Dunedain or Men of Numenor could be included, if the Muse wants. I have no preference for what I don't want.

Summary: Gil-galad explains the true meaning of Yule to Elwing.

Rating: PG-13

Title: Dear Adar and Naneth…

Request first Yule in Avernien and how two very different groups of survivors (from Doriath and Gondolin) overcame their differences and problems to celebrate. Please include Tuor, Idril, Elwing and Eärendil.
Summary: As the first Yuletide for the refugees of Gondolin draws near, Elwing of Doriath makes her observations about their little prince in a letter to her absent parents. 3893 words without header.
Rating: PG, for discussion of death, talk of love and marriage, nothing explicit
A/N: Thank you to Dawn Felagund and Susana for the betas, and again thank you to Susana for the extremely helpful nudges to my Muse and assistance when it was flagging. Thank you to the Mods for understanding about my Muse's behavior! *grin*

Title: A Midnight Profound

Recipient: Rhyselle

Request: I'd like a story set in the First Age after Finrod has met the Edain for the first time.  I'd like to see how the Edain teach the Elves why and how they celebrate Yule/Solstice. :)  It can be told either as a flashback or memory, or as if it's happening in the present.  It must have Finrod at least mentioned in it, although how he fits in will be up to the author.  Would also like a mention of someone's white beard, a child, and the color red, and stars.

Summary: Finrod tells another Elf (who this is is up to the reader) about the traditions of yule, as celebrated by the Edain. Quoted in Italics are poems by Robert Herrick and H.P Lovecraft, as well as a little of the ‘Sussex Carol’ and the rest is mine.

Rating: Suitable for all.

Title: The Annals of the West, Part I
Author: Dreamflower
Recipient: Celeritas AKA labourslamp
Request: I'd like to see your take on the after-life of any of the Great Tales that make up Tolkien's legendarium and were written down for our (eventual) reading. What kinds of people wrote them down? Who made sure--and how--that they survived at all, let alone managed to reach Tolkien? I don't care which tale or era you choose to highlight (or even a collection?)--anything from Cuivienen* to that mysterious extra volume of the Red Book made by the Fairbairns--and I don't care which stage of the stories' lives you focus on (if you choose one at all!)--creation, transmission, reception (positive or negative?), duplication, up to translation and publication. Just give me something about manuscripts!
*Not the Ainulindalë in this case, since even though the events may have happened earlier, the Elves wouldn't have learned of it till later.

Author's Notes: This story turned out much longer than I had any intention of writing. For this reason I have divided it into four main story parts, plus a short epilogue and end notes. These will be posted here separately over the next two days. I hope you don't mind not getting all your story at one time, Celeritas!
Summary: ”In Brandy Hall there were many works dealing with Eriador and the history of Rohan. Some of these were composed or begun by Meriadoc himself…It was probably at Great Smials that The Tale of Years was put together, with the assistance of material collected by Meriadoc.” (Prologue: Notes on the Shire Records) In Part One, Merry has an idea.
Rating: G.

Title: Elanor’s Yuletide

Rating: G
Recipient: Thundera Tiger
Theme: 2010 Yule Fic Exchange
Elements - Request: I would love something cross-cultural. Anything set during the time period of LotR would also be fun. If people want character suggestions, I love anything involving Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf (or any one of those characters in combination with any other). But I'm not picky. The real request is just something cross-cultural.

Author's Notes : ThunderaTiger requested a “multicultural” Yule story. Hope this one fits the bill:)

Summary: A homesick Elanor Gamgee spends the season of Yule at Minas Tirith.

Title: Talk of Paths to be Trod
Rating: PG-13
Theme: 2010 Yule Fic Exchange
Elements: A request: I'd be very happy to receive a story set in Rohan and featuring Eowyn.

Author's Notes: For Keiliss, who indicated she particularly likes Eleves and asked for something set in Imladris or Gil-galad’s court, or in Rohan and featuring Éowyn. I hope this doesn’t disappoint her. I’ve tried to work both into this tale, even though it is set within my In Empty Lands series.

Summary: In the days spent within Rivendell before the Fellowship departed on its quest, Boromir had occasion to dine with Aragorn and his brothers, all newly returned from their searches for signs of the Nazgûl. In the morning following Aragorn’s return final plans are set on when the Fellowship will leave the shelter of Elrond’s valley.

Title: Out to Play
Rating: PG
Theme: 2010 Yule Fic Exchange
Elements: Request: I’d like a sort of “Night before Christmas” storytelling by Paladin Took to his children. The entire family is all cozy and warm by the fire and soon it will be bedtime for the younger children. Pippin is around 7 or 8 years old. Paladin is telling the family a story about his own youth on the farm when something very mysterious happened on the eve of Yule. Just a real family-oriented fic, with maybe a touch of humor!

Author's Notes: Set at the tail end of 1397 S.R. Ages of principal characters are given below in real years and Mannish equivalent.

Paladin = 64 (40)

Pearl = 22 (14)

Pimpernel = 18 (11½)

Pervinca = 12 (7½)

Pippin = 7 (4½)

Summary: When Pippin demands the importation of a Buckland Yule tradition back home, Paladin must reach into memory for a bed-time story.

Title: Green Grows the Holly
Rating: G
Theme: 2010 Yule Fic Exchange
Elements: A story in which Aragorn and Gandalf discuss the alternative routes open to them as they either prepare for or take part in the quest, or in which they spend Yule together at any time in their mutual acquaintance. The inclusion of Frodo and/or the other Hobbits would be seen as a bonus.

Summary: The Fellowship finds the means to celebrate Yule at the beginning of the Quest.

Recipient: Linaewen
Beta: Dreamflower
Author's Notes: This tale follows my story from last year, “A Yule to Remember” and also makes references to another of my Yule stories, “The Gift of Love”. I hope this story fulfills my recipient’s request!

Title: There and Back Again – A Dwarvish Drabble Series
Rating: G
Theme: 2010 Yule Fic Exchange
Elements: Request: As for what I'd like, I enjoy stories set in Rohan, stories with Dwarves, Dwarvish/other cultural interaction, and more obscure time periods. But I'm easy.
Recipient: Thevina Findulas
Author's Notes: I hope that you like this Yule Fic, Thevina Finduilas. I'd had the idea for quite some time but got so sick with Bronchitis that I couldn't write for weeks. I'd have liked to have given you more drabbles about the trip back to the Lonely Mountain about Gloin and Fris and Gimli and their friends but ran out of time. Happy Holidays!

Summary: Gloin journeys back to the Blue Mountains to fetch family and friends to migrate to the recently liberated Lonely Mountain. Sorry I couldn't figure out how to set it in Rohan, but Gloin insisted that this was the route he'd taken.

Today, show one of your characters as they assume an alias. I want Gandalf and Pippin to get switched. Or, if you feel that's a bit much to have someone handle (both changing) just Gandalf becoming Pippin.
