Title: Preservation
Theme: third anniversary
Elements: A line from the hobbits' walking song
Author notes: Family traditions and puns...Apologies for the lateness as we went on a week's vacation and things got complicated.
Summary: Merry and Pippin go foraging in the summer with a purpose...

"Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe..."<\i>

It was not too early in the day when they set out, but the fog was just drifting back from the meadows and butterflies were just lifting off the flowers into the air.

"Not too quickly ahead, please!" Merry's shout was answered by a lot of giggling from around the bend of the path and a great deal of overdone, deliberately slower stomping of little hobbit feet.

"Now, Merry, we were like that when we were younger," Pippin said, swinging his bucket in a gsture that Merry was pretty sure he'd seen when they were tiny.  "How many did your mum want?"

"At least eight full buckets of berries, she told me." They continued along the path after the gaggle of Took and Brandybuck cousins.

"Mum said that the preserves they put up while we were gone were what let the Tooks hold out so long against the invaders." Pippin huffed out an amused breath.  "They couldn't figure out why the whole smial wasn't starving to death.  Ah, here we are!"

They set about organizing the young ones to pick as many berries as they could, knowing full well that they would likely as not eat as many as were picked. The warmth of the summer sun was cozy now, fog driven away by the heat until the next morning.

"Do you remember, Pip, how our Granny used to sneak us bits of fruit under the table when we all sat around cutting it up for jellies and jams?"

There was a chuckle from the other side of the brambles.  "I am fairly sure, my dear Merry, that Auntie Esme knew all about that at the time.."

"Quite likely, I'd agree.  And she shall do the same one of these days for our little ones." He went on plucking berries and putting them into the bucket at his side until he heard a little cry of pain that made him drop his bucket and run round to the other side of the bush.

"It's only a thorn..." Pippin's voice was muffled from the finger he had stuck in his mouth.  Removing it, he rolled his eyes at his cousin's still protective reflexes..  "You needn't fret.  'Tis one small scar I shall count as honourable as the others."

And then his voice was muffled against soft linen as Merry drew him into a quick embrace.  As they went back to picking the berries, he tossed one and let Pippin catch it in his mouth.  "We have both been well preserved, then..."

He was completely unsurprised when the next berry was thrown with great accuracy at his forehead.

This is such a sweet vignette! I can just see those two taking the small fry berrying, and remembering their own younger days!

What a sweet and cousin-y interlude. This made me smile.

Oh, I'm glad! That's what it was supposed to do. :)

Ah, bless the Brandybuck and the Took! I do love this glimpse at the two of them, and the hint that the grownups seek to make the children feel special by "sneaking" them tidbits.

Heh...with my grandmother, it was sliced bits of apricot in the early summer. :). And yeah, my mom knew she was doing it.
