The Tree and Flower Awards Categories!

Small Tree and Flower banner, Small banner for the T&F awards on MPTT

Hello everyone! I hope you are excited about the upcoming awards!

Nominations will begin on Friday, August 10, with a series of nomination posts. Each post will be for several categories of a certain kind, and will have a comment thread set up for each category. You can nominate by commenting to those threads with the name of the story and the author. Those comments will be screened.

In the meanwhile, behind this cut is a list of the categories, so that you can look it over and decide what story you want to nominate for each one. Remember that you can nominate in as many categories as you wish, but only ONE nomination per category. You may not self-nominate. I am finding the character categories limiting. I write characters like Aegnor, Fingolfin, Fingon and the like. None of those are listed there. Does that mean they are excluded or are the character categories flexible for what is submitted? There are so many more characters than you have listed here that I personally write and have had compete in awards. I would like to have my characters named. I think Fingolfin is pretty major and should be named. I would add people rather than exclude them. House of Finwe could mean anything really and is not descriptive and might not get a story read.

I must confess I don't know enough about the Silm characters-- but there are a few days until nominations begin, and perhaps we can be persuaded.

I will check with dawn_felagund, who's the Silm expert on our mod team and see if she thinks it's feasible to expand the character list by a few more names. The list just looked so long already, but I'm not averse to adding characters that are significant!

There are also categories that aren't character-driven, though; we do have categories for Elves and for the Silm, for example, so there is still room for stories about your characters.

At any rate, I will let you know what we decide before the deadline, whichever way it goes, and will comment again to your comment with the answer.

(However, just in case this question arises for LotR characters: I do feel that the majority of those are covered already, and so don't look to expand that part of the list.)

I developed the Silmarillion-based categories, so I'll clarify how and why it was done as it was. The Tree and Flower Awards are only for stories archived on Many Paths to Tread. Therefore, when coming up with Silm-specific categories, I looked at what was being written on the archive.

Unfortunately, the only Silm characters I could find that had more than 20 stories archived (and that is a still a small number on an archive with more than 2000 stories!) are the ones who are included in this list. The characters you specifically list have 3 stories (Aegnor), 8 stories (Fingolfin), and 10 stories (Fingon) written about them on MPTT, which are not really enough to justify including them as their own categories.

Because there were so few Silm characters who made a viable category on their own, I suggested to Dreamflower that we have categories for groups of characters, i.e. "Favorite characterization of a member of the House of Finwe," so that Silm writers would be represented in categories more appropriate for the stories that actually exist on the archive.

I don't know if my comods will want to run this award again in the future; I'm sure that if folks enjoy it, then it will be open for consideration, at least. I'd suggest then archiving stories about those characters on MPTT and encouraging other Silm writers to share their work on the site as well. The site could definitely use a better Silm presence, but of course, it's ultimately up to we Silm writers to make that happen! :)

I guess I did not read the post clearly enough. I thought this was the new scheme for the new awards program. Not really getting it. I did not pay attention to where this was posted. Anyhoo. Carry on!

I was wondering about Glorfindel - he covers all Ages and a search brought up several pages of stories featuring him.

Glorfindel is a reasonable addition.

Will people who have problems with LJ be able to nominate via e mail? My friend has problems loading LJ on her laptop.
I'm excited about the contest and persuaded a friend to upload her enjoyable stories to MPTT!

Yes. Those who have trouble accessing LJ can nominate via private email to one of the mods. We will also have a poll at the Yahoo group as well as LJ for voting. You can get more details at the original announcement post with the rules.

Thank you. One further question, can an author have more than one story competing in a category or not? I just wondered what would happen if say, I nominated one of an author's stories as Favourite Faramir story and then someone else nominated a different one of that author's stories for the same category?
Aug. 9th, 2012 02:30 pm (UTC)
Yes, since it is the *stories* competing and not the authors; however if the same story is nominated in two different categories (e.g. someone has a story about Aragorn nominated for "Men" and then the same story is also nominated for "Aragorn", the author would have to choose which one to run it in.)

I haz a question. One of the genre's one can nominate for is crossovers. I know that I have written a few crossovers, but I can't search for other crossover stories at the archive because crossover isn't listed a genre... *ahem*

I believe "Crossover" is listed as a category at the archive instead of a genre.
Aug. 11th, 2012 12:18 am (UTC)
Ok, I was obviously looking in the wrong place! Thanks :)

What happens if two people unknown to each other nominate the same story? one of my friends is reluctant to nominate in case her nominations are wasted because someone chose the story before her.
Do you get a chance to nominate something else if that happens or is your nomination wasted/
Aug. 11th, 2012 11:06 am (UTC)
So far it hasn't yet happened! If it does, we will PM the nominator and let her know! We won't let you waste your noms!

Thank you, my friend has decided to nominate after all!
There seems to be a bit of a problem with non fiction- other as I can only find a single piece on the site which seems to fit that description, unless I'm missing something?
This contest is certainly making me explore MPTT!

That's great about your friend!

Check non-fiction as a category instead of as a genre! It's listed as a separate category on the site, just like crossover.

We do have a lot to explore there, don't we? I am pleased with how we have grown over the last 3 years!
Aug. 13th, 2012 02:35 pm (UTC)
I checked out genre and found 19 non-fiction pieces, but apart from one, they are all either essays or research articles, which makes it tricky to know what to choose for "other".

I'm enjoying finding new stories to read. I fear that before the contest, I just posted my latest story and checked out what had just been posted and nothing else and as result missed some treasures!

Yeah! It's me again! I have a question... regarding the category: Favorite story by a new author (author a member of MPTT for six months or less)

How can I find out if an author is new to MPTT?
Aug. 14th, 2012 07:55 pm (UTC)
Go to her author page (by clicking on her name). In the upper left corner will be some information: Pen name, real name, member since (this is the one you want), and membership status.
Aug. 14th, 2012 10:07 pm (UTC)
So, for this cate I actively first have to search for a story and then check if a member is a newcomer or first have to run past 115 authors to see how recently they joined and then rec a new story? I am not sure if I have time for that...
Aug. 17th, 2012 12:27 pm (UTC)
Me again! Does "Favorite characterization of a Numenorean" mean someone who actually lives in Numenor, or can it be someone descended from the people who lived there as Tolkien in LOTR refers some characters as have the blood of Numenor running true in them.

And does "Story set during the Hobbit" actually have to be about events in the book or could it be about events elsewhere at the same time?

I found it tricky not having a pre LOTR category as well as a post one as there are so many excellent stories!
Aug. 17th, 2012 06:46 pm (UTC)
Does "Favorite characterization of a Numenorean" mean someone who actually lives in Numenor?

Yes. That category was set up to help deal with Silmarillion characters in that time period.

And does "Story set during the Hobbit" actually have to be about events in the book or could it be about events elsewhere at the same time?

Yes it could-- if it takes place during the timespan of the book. So it could include something about young Estel, or about the attack on Dol Goldur or whatever.

We decided not to include "pre-LotR" because the ToY is part of LotR, and so covers much else!
