Cast Away

Safe and warm in their green herb-scented nest in Wellinghall, Merry was about to drop off to sleep when he heard Pippin heave a sigh.

"What's wrong, Pip?"

"I was missing my brooch, the one the Lady gave me when we left Lothlorien." He clutched at the neck of his cloak.

"I'd been meaning to ask about it, Pip; did the Orcs steal it?"

"No. I was just a fool of a Took. I threw it away on the march, a clue for Strider if he was looking for us. Just a stupid thing to do, and I regret it."

Merry and Pippin were gathering up the remains of their picnic with their newly reunited friends. Pippin paused to grin at the brooch in his hand; he'd never expected to ever see it again, and he couldn't believe it had come back to him. He polished it on his sleeve and fastened it back at the neck of his cloak. He grinned. "I won't have to keep holding my cloak on now!"

"Good old Strider!" said Merry. "You were right about Aragorn following us!"

Pippin nodded. "I was, wasn't I?"

"Not so foolish now?"

"I don't regret it after all."

Oh, this was just delightful. No fool of a Took at all! His action, as much as he may have regretted it, brought back the flame of hope to Aragorn and his companions. A great moment to be selected for your drabble pairing.

It truly was a far more momentous action than Pippin ever realized, I think. He trusted to his little flash of intuition, even while he tried to dismiss it as "selfish". I've always been fascinated by that bit..

That was always a fascinating part of the story -- that Pippin sensed Aragorn was following them. It's great to see "the rest of the story" here.

I think that there was a certain amount of prescience in the Took family line--Pippin had a couple of flashes of foresight; Frodo often had prescient dreams; and both of them plus Merry, had prescient dreams at Tom Bombadil's house, though Sam slept soundly.

I've also always been fascinated by that exchange in particular, and the significance of Aragorn returning that brooch to Pippin...

Really like this! It's a great little snippet! And, you know? It must have happened just that way.

Or something very similar anyway, I think. I'm sure Pippin missed that brooch and was very pleased to have it back.

The perfect item from book-verse to base your pair of stories upon--and love how the lost and found themes fit together so very well! Beautifully done!

Thanks! You know that I've long been fascinated by that part of the story, especially the exchange when Aragorn returned the brooch. It must have meant so much to Pippin to know his gesture hadn't been in vain!

That episode really seems to fit the prompt perfectly, doesn't it? And of course Pippin would have discussed it with Merry at some point, wouldn't he?

Yes, even if it was for no other reason than Merry wondering where it was and why Pippin was having to clutch his cloak!

It was the first thing that came to my mind when the theme came up!

Just lovely!

That's a sweet interaction between them, and the drabble pair ties things together very neatly.

Those two must have had much to say to one another after their dreadful experience; this one little thing I am sure was so significant to Pippin and Merry would be bound to notice.

It had to be a pair: what was lost got found! *grin*

Thank you!
