The hobbits were laying around Bag End garden where a playful breeze was ruffling the hollyhocks and sending fluffy white clouds scuttling around a bright blue summer sky.

'What do you want to do later?' asked Merry.

'Forts!'

'Carp fishing at Crickhollow?'

'Forts!'

'Skittles at The Roaring Rooster?'

'Forts!'

'Belt up, Pip. We did that yesterday.'

'It was GOOD!'

'You got beat.'

'I had a splinter. I'll get even today.'

'We're not doing forts.'

'Aw, lets!'

'I'll splinter YOU if you don't shut up. Frodo! What do you want to do?'

Frodo's was playing with a whirlygig, a wooden stick with strings at the top which flew out with small carved birds at either side when you rubbed it in both hands.

'Frodo!'

Frodo stopped spinning the toy. 'Forts,' he said.

'I love you!' squealed Pippin.

Frodo smiled, then got up and wandered off up the hill, looking restless.

'Sam,' said Merry, 'what's up with Frodo ?'

'Don't ask me.'

'You always know.'

''I never know.'

Merry sighed. 'Now don't make me bring out the big arrows.'

'Oh aye. What's that?'

Merry brandished a bunch of long tailed catkins, fluffy and ripe, which he stroked with delicate menace.

'If you keep on being a trucklemuffin, Pippin sits on your head and I get busy with these round yer ticklebits. Frankly, I don't know which of those two things is worse.'

'I do,' grinned Pippin, parping a small fart.

'Thanks for clearing that up, Pip. Sam, spill or be suffocated. In 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 ...'

'Alright, alright!' Sam snapped. 'It's ... the change in the weather.'

'What?'

'When the wind changes, the breeze from the south. He always gets like that. Don't ask me why, that's all I know.'

'Interesting. But useless. Pip, get him.'

'Here! You said!' Sam spluttered.

'You don't think we came armed for nothing did you?'

Soon roaring could be heard for miles.

Later Merry joined Frodo where he sat at the top of the hill, gazing out to the West.

'What DO you see out there?'

'Nothing. I … hear something sometimes. A sort of singing. I sometimes think it's the sea, calling me. Silly, isn't it?'

'If we go there someday, will you stop being a donkey?'

'Alright. If you let Pip win today.'

'WHAT?'

'For me. Promise?'

Merry groaned but kept his promise. And they had a wonderful day.

This was cute! Just the sort of aimless dialogue the young will have sometimes.

This is a very sweet scene. I especially love 'trucklemuffin' and ticklebits'.

At least they appear to have had a good bit of fun on an aimless day. Love that Frodo already hears the Sea calling to him.
