A Hobbit Walking Party

The cousins left at sunset for the fourteen-mile trek to the Great Smials. The day had been sweltering, but now the Sun sought her rest. The summer breeze brought a welcome respite as they ambled through the fields and orchards beneath the purpling sky. As usual, Pippin ranged ahead of his older cousins, darting off looking for mushrooms, or dashing into a garden to scrump.

Merry and Frodo strolled behind, watching as Pippin purloined some ripe tomatoes. He came back with three, and Merry and Frodo did not refuse to share his loot.

Frodo tried to look disapproving, but he could refuse Pippin nothing right now as he thought of betraying him. And Merry? Merry might never forgive him. Suddenly his mood sobered. He carefully resisted putting his hand in his pocket.

Merry stopped and leaned against a nearby elm. finishing the tomato Pip had purloined. He noticed Frodo's changing mood; he knew Frodo was thinking about the Ring and his journey again. He wondered what Frodo would think if he realised Merry knew all about it. At least Pippin could enjoy himself without worrying.

They are doing it again, thought Pippin, fretting about that cursed Ring. It was up to him then, to change the mood. He raised his voice in song:

A hobbit of habit is Nob O' the Lea...

Author's Notes: This takes place just before Midsummer, in 1418, as Frodo, Merry and Pippin head for the Great Smials from Bag End, where Merry and Pippin had been visiting, to spend the holiday there. In my story "A Conspiracy of Hobbits" , not only did Frodo not know about Merry's Conspiracy, but at this point in time Merry was unaware that Pippin did know about it.

I just love this. In such a carefree, innocent walk, so many undercurrents are stirring.

Undercurrents, exactly. Each of the older two cousins trying to protect the younger, and the youngest of all knowing just what they are doing.

I love the change in POV and that Pippin, carefully protected, is protecting THEM. The weight of fear is so swift, intruding on their walk, but it's the love between them that keeps their secrets from each other. Lovely!

"it's the love between them that keeps their secrets from each other."

Yes. In my mind, the only reason they were able to keep their secrets is that they weren't used to keeping them from one another. But their family love is strong, and they are trying so hard to protect.

I've always thought Pippin the best secret keeper among the Conspirators, for all his lively chatter. After all, he journeyed from Bag End to Crickhollow with Frodo and Sam, and Frodo never guessed that he knew exactly what was going on.

I love them all fretting about each other and Pippin taking care of them all, and there was method behind his antics. I love the gentle waterfall of the changing points of view. Just lovely.

Thank you! I know the fashion these days is to stick to only one POV, but I just love to play inside everybody's head! It's good to know that's appreciated!

Trust Pippin to be aware of the moods of the others and to seek to distract his cousins as best he could!

Yes. Frodo is already feeling the burden of his secret, and so is not reading his younger cousins as well as he usually does. And Merry is so focused on Frodo, he's missing any signs that Pippin is putting out.

But Pippin is watching them both. IMO, Pip's the best secret keeper of the cousins--after all, he went all the way from Bag End to Crickhollow with Frodo and Sam, and Frodo never suspected his younger cousin was anything but carefree.

I like how this flows one into the other, showing the conspiracy of each!

Yes, exactly! In my version, there was more than one conspiracy. There was Frodo's conspiracy with Gandalf and Sam to leave the Shire. There was Merry's conspiracy with Sam and Fatty to keep track of Frodo and see that he did not leave alone, while keeping Pippin safe at home. And then there was Pippin's conspiracy to go with them as well (aided reluctantly by Fatty).

At one point the only one who did not know of the conspiracies was Frodo (though he knew his own part, of course) and the only ones who knew of all the conspiracies were Pippin and Fatty! LOL!

-LOL!- I'd been wondering about Fatty's part but I was too busy trying to work out the thread of conspiracies! Thanks for laying it out!
