Half

It had been a celebration of the hobbit's birthday; yet Bilbo had left abruptly. Lindir was oblivious to the offense he had given. The Elf had dismissed the hobbit's latest effort at poetry, smirking slyly. "Perhaps it was half so good as a Man could do."

Leaving Master Elrond to rebuke Lindir, Aragorn rose, and followed his elderly friend outside to the terrace. He stood behind him, placing a supportive hand on Bilbo's shoulder. They gazed over the balustrade.

"I thought your verse well done."

Bilbo sniffed. "Perhaps I should forget trying to impress him. Perian! Halfling! I am a hobbit, not half of anything!

"I did not know you found the terms so offensive."

The hobbit looked at him wryly. "And how would you like it if I went about referring to you as twice-as-tall-as-you-ought-to-be?"

Aragorn chuckled. "You have a point, my friend!"

Loved Bilbo's last line! :D :D

Aragorn is a good, attentive friend.

Thanks! I've always thought the hobbits wouldn't care much for being thought of as "half" a person. They would usually be too polite to say anything, but Bilbo is old enough to be outspoken!

He's observant; he'd notice when someone he cared about was upset!

Thanks! I'd always meant to tell the circumstances of that conversation, and this was the perfect chance.

Yes, and he'd not hesitate to express himself to Aragorn about it!

Nicely done by Aragorn. What we most need when we've been offended is someone to listen and understand, and that's what he gave Bilbo. I hope Elrond had some sharp words for Lindir.

Aragorn has always shown himself loyal to his friends, and I know he understood.

I've always had a little bit of headcanon as to why Lindir is so disdainful of mortals--I'm sure Elrond pulled him up sharp though!

Now to find out what Elrond had to say to Lindir!

My headcanon is that at one time he allowed himself to become fond of a mortal, and was shocked at how quickly that mortal was gone. Ever since he has tried to convince himself that mortals are ephemeral and don't produce much of worth.

Thank you. I love the idea of Lindir trying to distance himself from something that had mattered too much in the past and left scars. There's such a sad story hidden in there.

thanks, dear! I think Bilbo must have been very much on his dignity when he first came to stay in Rivendell.

In "A New Reckoning" I mentioned that he'd once said that to Aragorn, who was always careful afterwards to say "hobbits".
