October 2014 Challenge: Sweet or Savoury

The October Challenge will have the theme "Sweet or Savoury?". Each story is to be a recipe!fic. (A Recipe!fic is a story in which the recipe for a dish included in the story is given, either separately at the end, or within the body of the story.) Participants will choose whether they wish to include a "sweet" or a "savoury" dish. The prompt for the challenge will be a taste-related sensation, which must be mentioned in the story. When you comment to join the challenge, please indicate whether you want to write about "sweet" or "savoury"!

The October challenge stories will be due Saturday, October 24, and will be revealed on Monday, October 27. Please tag your story "challenge: sweet or savoury" and "month: 2014 october". Please remember to use the following header template (also found on the community profile page), and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line.

To request your elements, please leave a comment to this post, and mention "sweet" or "savory". If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your element. Or you can email the mods at manypaths@lotrgfic.com.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our October challenge!

Guess that leaves me out. I'm no good at recipe!fics. I'm sure I'll some great ones posted, though.

You never know! You might do better than you think.

But really, that's OK. Not every challenge is for everyone.

Hope your prompt will suit your idea!

I'm game, and actually "on time" for a change. Please give me a savoury element.

On the way!

Wow, a whole new fic genre/subgenre sprung up in the few years I was away from fandom. It sounds like a lot of fun. I'd like to try my hand at it, but what happens if I commit and then find myself unable to fulfill the claim?
Oct. 11th, 2014 02:04 pm (UTC)
We are very forgiving of such things. We accept late entries, or sometimes people who were not able to finish will do so in January, which is "potluck" month, for leftover unfinished stories or unclaimed prompts. We never penalize anyone for not finishing our regular monthly challenges (though we are stricter for our holiday exchange or the occasional remix).

You can check our tags to see previous recipe!fic challenge stories, and you can also check out the shire_kitchen comm! where several recipe!fic challenges were held in the past! I really love them.

Just let me know if you want sweet or savoury!

ETA: I'll also need an address to send your prompt to.

Your prompt has been sent. I hope you like it, and welcome to our challenge community. If you have any questions just let me know. And please let me know if you got your email, since this is your first time.

Have fun,

Hi again and thanks. :)
Oct. 12th, 2014 11:38 pm (UTC)
I'd like to be 'sweet', please!
Oct. 13th, 2014 01:26 pm (UTC)
Oh goody! Your prompt's on the way!
Oct. 15th, 2014 05:35 pm (UTC)
Keep coming back, looking, thinking I'll never get it done, shouldn't sign up for things when I don't trust myself to finish... but it'd be fun, never done a recipefic before.

Savoury, please.

My apologies, dear! I just discovered your prompt still in my draft folder. I thought I had sent it already! I've sent it now, though I will perfectly understand if you don't have time for it. You know, though, that we always welcome late entries!

Got it! No problem, but I might be a bit late posting *g*

I can't get the tag format to work
I will have a little savoury recipe feature but this format won't format in Word. And it's been a while so I'm not sure how to convert baking instructions into Middle Earth terms. I can't say 'set the oven to 350 F."

Re: I can't get the tag format to work
It's all right--you can simply append the modern recipe to the end of the story, or if you want it to sound more like something they'd have had in Middle-earth, you could simply use the words "moderately hot oven" or "bake on the hearth" (rather than in the embers, which would be hotter).

Thanks. Please email an element to kimby092367@gmail.com. This is my first participation in this particular community.

Sweet, please!
Eek! Very late! I was away last week, and have been ill in bed all week, but I do have a vague food-related idea that I might possibly be able to get written this weekend, if the prompt suits it, and if I feel well enough to write. Can't make any promises, but I'd like a sweet prompt, please.
