The Wizard’s Gift

“That ball is old!” observed Pippin-lad.

Young Ham nodded his agreement.

Their Sam-dad laughed. “It is old. It’s said as old Gandalf give it to the first bairn born alive in Bag End, and him give it to the only one of his cousin’s children as survived his birth, down in Number Five, there on the Row. Then, hearin’ as my mum was expectin’, he sent it all the way from Buckland with his dad to have it given to me when I was born in April of 1380. When we was expectin’ Elanor, him and me agreed as it should go to her. It’s been there for each of you, and now it’s come to our little Tom. A special gift, originally from old Gandalf hisself.”

A still colorful woolen ball was set in little Tolman’s cradle, and the infant hugged it gladly.

What a sweet tradition, and wonderful story for Sam to pass along to his children.

I so agree, Janet. Thanks so!

That is a lovely sequel.

I'm so glad you think so, CW. Thanks! Had to follow the last story with this one, I found.

Oh, and I absolutely LOVE your icon!

The icon is made from a photo of the gift my husband gave me for me birthday a couple of years ago - it is Gandalf by Jay Johnston - I have
Théoden King as well.

As always in your writing, the sense of love comes through so clearly.

I suspect that Olorin/Gandalf came to love the Hobbits he knew over the years deeply.

Thank you so much Larner. It is less thank a week after my, very quiet, birthday. Anyway, birthday gifts, like Wizards, are never late. They always arrive when they are meant to. Your story cheered up a rough day of job hunting. Who could guess that I am not good enough to work at my local supermarket!
This story is lovely and is very apt as I am having trouble deciding which treasures have to go in order to squeeze myself into a small room at my dad' spouse. The teddy given to me at my birth is still sitting on the end of my bed.

I sincerely hope that you are again gainfully employed as it appears you wish to be. Hope that all is going well with you. So, you have given up working as a catechist? Hope that your new place living with your father works out well.

I know how difficult it is to need to cut down, and dread the day I might have to move again. After all, I chose this house because it can so easily house my library of over 4000 books! Heh!

Gainfully employed job hunting to justify claiming job seekers allowance mainly to have my national insurance stamp paid. I still have 15 years to go until retirement age but there were a number of reasons to decide that the time was right to leave the job in London. I would still like to be involved in Catechetics but they rely on faith schools and volunteers here in Shire Country. Being unemployed, (well not being paid anyway,) is a definite eye opener into a different side of life. Living with dad is also proving to be interesting. His memory is proving to be quite poor so I think that I have made the right decision about the right time. I would really like a part time job to give me pocket money and enough time to sort the house, dog etc! I am not missing evening meetings and long hours but I do miss the people and the variety. Having to recycle some of my best friends, (books,) has been heartbreaking. Thank goodness fanfic is on line.
All the best, Liz
