Sam's Gratitude, by KathyG.

Sam’s Gratitude

Title: Sam’s Gratitude
Rating: G
Theme: Gratitude
Author's Notes: Sam is approaching his tweens, and he’s still receiving an education from Bilbo.
Summary: In this double drabble, Sam gets to thinking about how fortunate he is, because he can read.

Sam closed his book. As he rested his callused fingertips on its soft leathery cover, he smiled. It had been so good of Mr. Bilbo to give him a book for Yule! And a book about Elves! He had just finished reading it the third time.

He scanned the room. His gaffer was sitting on a stool across the room, whittling; Marigold was churning the goat’s milk into butter. For a moment, he thought of telling them a story from his book, but thought better of it.

They wouldn’t understand, Sam thought. Leastwise, my gaffer wouldn’t. He can’t read. No one ever taught him, or Marigold, either.

Gratitude surged through his heart. He could! Thanks to Mr. Bilbo, he could read and write and do math. He could pick up a book and read it; he could write letters to his brothers who lived so far away; he could calculate the amount of money needed to pay for seeds. And all thanks to Mr. Bilbo, who had taught him all that and told him stories about Elves, too.

So many working hobbits don’t never get to learn to read, he thought. My gaffer never did. I’m so thankful I did!

Such an education will stand him in good stead in the future, certainly! :) I wonder whether Sam will teach Marigold?

Well done!

Thanks!

Hmm. There's a thought. Too bad Sam couldn't also teach his gaffer!

Yes, that would have been nice! I wonder why the Gaffer never learned...

Not too hard to guess that his parents couldn't read, either. And apparently, Bilbo never got around to teaching him when he became an apprentice gardener.

This is a lovely, joyous moment for Sam, to be filled with such gratitude for a rare gift.

Yes, isn't it? Sam would be well aware, I'm thinking, that most working hobbits were illiterate, such as his family. He would also realize that if it hadn't been for Bilbo, he himself would have never learned to read and write. That Bilbo had educated him would have been cause for gratitude on Sam's part.

How very Sam-like, to be so thankful for and so proud of the achievement. Good for him! A lovely job!

Ah, but he is indeed a fortunate Hobbit to have the chance to learn more than but a craft to support himself. Nicely done!

What a charming, absolutely heart-warming Sam moment :) His ability to appreciate the simple joys of life (even though in his world literacy seems to be quite extraordinary) makes him such a lovable character. Besides, he will probably never look down on his relatives for being less educated. Thank you for capturing his personality in this nice little story.

Nope, I don't believe he will, either. And I agree with you about his ability to appreciate life's simple joys. He certainly is lovable! =)

This is lovely. What an important gift for anyone to receive and how it must have enlarged Sam's world. It's certainly the gift I'm grateful for every day. I'm glad it's brought Sam and Bilbo closer together.

I know what you mean. It gave Sam and Frodo something in common, too.
