A Bridge Between by Karri

Author: Karri
Title: A Bridge Between
Rating: G
Theme: Gratitude
Summary: Great fear finds unexpected resolution.
Word Count: 320

Thranduil resisted the urge to pace.  There had been, and still was, much to do before the North recovered from war.  He should be resting, he knew. He’d had precious little opportunity of late; he should not waste this one.  But there, alone in his solar, his thoughts shifted toward Legolas.

His son had written from Lothlorien to say he was well, but much time had passed since then – and much had happened.  Had Legolas survived?  If word had been sent, one way or the other, it had not reached him through the tumult.  Would it yet come?  Was it too much to hope for?

Legolas pushed down his growing despair as he rode ever northward.  Rumor of the battles in the North had reached him, of course, but he’d had battles of his own to fight.   He had not listened well enough…had not comprehended the devastation that had torn through his homeland.

Could any have survived it?  King Dain of the Mountain had not; nor had King Brand of Dale.  But of his father, of the Elvenking, he had heard naught.  Had word been sent, but not reached him through the chaos?  Would Thranduil be waiting for him?  Was it too much too hope for?

Unable to contain his disquiet any longer, Thranduil strode out to his great bridge.  Perhaps he could find some comfort in the new growth peeking out from beneath the charred remains of ancient trees.

Fear growing in his heart, Legolas could contain himself no longer.  Jumping from Arod’s back, he raced on foot toward his father’s great bridge.

Looking out into the wood, there he was!  Legolas, his son, his Greenleaf!

Looking toward the palace, there he was!  Thranduil, his father, the great Elvenking!

Reaching each other in a few long strides, their foreheads were soon pressed together, arms clasping one another’s.

“Thank you!” they whispered to each in unison.  “Thank you for surviving!”

Oh Karri, this is absolutely gorgeous! I *love* Thranduil and Legolas, and their families, and this reunion, while not quite the one I imagined for them, is nevertheless very close to my own headcanon (save that I have Thranduil riding to meet Legolas in Ithilien). I do so love this!

Thank you! I hadn't really thought a lot about how they might reunite, but as I was pondering a Hobbit-oriented drabble, this suddenly came to mind, and just hoped it would work and not be confusing. I'm glad that you found it enjoyable to read! :D

I'm glad for this fresh look at father and son. I've only seen them portrayed as cold and distant so this was a new approach and made perfect sense that the ravages of war would have sharpened their love and appreciation of each other. Thank you!

Alas, cold and distant is an idea that was first disseminated via fanfiction and then reinforced by PJ, but it doesn't match canon at all. I'm glad you enjoyed a different perspective on them. :)

What a relief!
Such a long parting in time of war and with little chance of news passing between...

I wonder, sometimes, if Legolas and Gimli would have preferred to return north to join the fight for their homes if they had the opportunity.
