The Gift of Dreaming

On a fine summer day, Faramir sat with Boromir on a high hill, looking out over the land they both loved. He looked over at his brother, then ducked his head.

“I know that look,” Boromir said. “You had another dream, didn’t you?”

“Yes. I’m glad I can tell you about them.”

“Always,” Boromir assured him.

Faramir gazed into the distance, a faraway look in his eyes. “I dreamed I was out walking through the trees when someone approached me. I thought I saw… a shining star on his brow. He was very tall. His face wasn’t clear to me; it was as if I was looking at him through many layers of glass, all blurred. Or was he the one peering through the glass? I heard him speak...”

“Go on,” his brother urged.

Faramir took a deep breath. “He said, ‘You are ever in my sight, and my heart, you and all your kin. As long as you and your brother stand true, your land will know peace.’”

Boromir stared at Faramir in amazement. Never had his brother shared a dream like this.

“We must tell Father,” he insisted. “That man you saw... do you think it was—”

From far off came the clanging of a loud, deep bell.

“Supper!” Boromir cried out happily. “Race you down the hill!”

With joyous shouts the tweens took off, tumbling and laughing as they went. And from the open door of their home, Diamond and Pippin stood together hand in hand, their faces wreathed in smiles, watching their sons run towards them.
