Fili did his best to hide the sorrow that he was feeling.

He had been so happy when Thorin had told Kili and him that they would going with him on the journey to Erebor. Kili hadn't even believed it, he was sure that they were playing a trick on him.

It was the morning that they were to be setting out and he couldn't bear the look in their mother's eyes. He knew that she had been crying the night before.

"You two be careful," she said pulling both of them into a hug. "Look after each other, and your uncle, Mahal knows he takes too much upon himself. He'll need your help before the journey is over.”

"We will mother," Fili answered.

"And Kili, I need you to promise me something."

Kili had a surprise look on his face, "What?"

"I need you to promise that you'll listen to your brother. You can be so reckless sometimes, promise me that you'll come back to me."

Kili glanced at Fili but he only shrugged, their mother was right.

Kili finally sighed, "I promised."

"Good," Dis pulled him into another hug and handed him a rune stone. "Make sure to keep it."

“I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!” Their mother yelled pulling Fili and Kili into a huge hug, as they welcomed her to Erebor.

Fili was going to speak but their uncle beat him to it. “Did I not say that they would be fine?” Thorin asked stepping up behind them, placing a hand on both of their shoulder. “They were a great help to the quest as well. You should be proud of them.”

“I am,” Dis said.

Fili glanced to his brother, Kili though was looking for something in his pocket.

“What is it Kili?” Thorin asked.

“Here it is.” Fili watched as Kili pulled out the rune stone that their mother had given him and held it to her. “I made you a promise mother and I had no plans on breaking it. A Durin never goes back on his words,” he said glancing towards Thorin. It was something that Thorin had said about his own promises that he had made and almost broke. Fili thought that Kili had overstepped, but Thorin only smiled and nodded his head.

“No, my sweet one, no they do not,” she said resting their foreheads together.

That "everyone lives" threw me for a moment, but I liked the concept behind returning the runestone to his mother.
