Another Time, Another Yesterday

Acrid smoke and the stench of burnt flesh filled the air. She glanced at the swirling embers, the drumbeats oddly muffled now. Turning, she tripped, falling to the flagstones over a small body. Pushing back upright, she ran away from the dead toddler.

"Must find the tunnel, Idril needs me. Where are my children, where is Glorfindel?"

Gasping, she rested for a few seconds, then resumed her run, attempting to leave the sounds of war behind her. The growls of the enemy and screams of both warriors and victims grated equally on her shredded nerves.

"My babies. Where are my babies?"

An elaborate gateway loomed ahead through the darkling light. A low moan escaped her.

"No, that was another time, another yesterday, long ago. The past has caught up with me. All hope died long ago, now it is my turn." She walked slowly, entering the foyer of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain.

*sniff* One of so many sad, tragic days. Beautifully written.

Thank you so much! It was fun to actually write again after almost a year away from it.

This is really, really dark and angsty - I love it!

Thanks, it was fun to actually write something again after such a long time away from the keyboard.

Ah - poor Helyanwë. This is really gut-wrenching.

You've known my Helyanwe for many a year now. It was great to revisit a character I've loved for so long. Thanks for your kind words.

Is she an original character of yours?
Dec. 1st, 2015 10:11 am (UTC)
Helyanwe has been an OFC of mine since 2011 - so a very long time. I've posted thousands of words of her stories over the years (and have hundreds of thousands of words of her story just in my computer that may never see the public eye).

I'll look forward to see more of her. Where can I find the first fics?
Dec. 2nd, 2015 02:02 am (UTC)
I have most of my fics posted on Faerie (http://efiction.esteliel.de/) and I guarantee quite a few of them are from my Helyanwe pathway.

Nice twist at the end. What happened to her children?
Dec. 1st, 2015 10:13 am (UTC)
In one of my stories from a few years ago (I've been writing her since early 2011, so it's been a while), she was fleeing Gondolin when her children were slain by arrows as Glorfindel fought the balrog. Their son and daughter, and of course Glorfindel himself, all died as they attempted to escape the doomed refuge.

Thanks for the kind words, it was rather nice to actually write again after almost a year away from it.

Well that's a downer. I know it does feel good to get back to writing after an absence though. Glad the muse is back.

What a heart-wrenching scene. WOuld love to read more. :)

There's a lot of Helyanwe peppered through my writings. I probably have the most of my stories on Faerie if you want to check some of them out.

I realized after the fact that you may not be aware of Faerie, one of the better Tolkien archive websites for fanfiction of all ratings. Here's a link if you're interested or didn't know where to find the website. http://efiction.esteliel.de/

Oh how sad! Very vividly shown, I could easily picture the horrible scene.

Thank you my dear. I blame you for the perfect challenge. It pushed me to sit at a keyboard and compose something other than my daily blog. *hugs*

The shock and terror might do that, yes, recall those old terrors to her. Poor Helyanwe, she's facing it bravely.
Dec. 1st, 2015 10:19 am (UTC)
Well, she is Feanorean - stubborn, talented, and headstrong. I'm not sure she's brave as much as resigned, but either way, she will take what is ahead of her as she must. Thank you so much for commenting!

If the first thoughts were horrible to imagine, the snapping back to the realization that THIS is today while THAT was yesterday, and facing her own ending NOW has shaken me as much as it has her. What courage she shows in the end.

Thank you so much, my dear friend. It really was a joy to actually write something once again and I love Helyanwe as a character so very much. It was a delight to return to her tale once again as well as participate in a LOTR Community Challenge.

Oh how sad! And what a perfect illustration of the way Elves remember.
