This month we are doing something completely different. Instead of a story, this month we will honor International Fanworks Month with our very first rec challenge, called "Fandom Favorites".

You will comment here, and make one self-rec, one fic rec for someone else, and one art fic per comment. This is a chance to spread the love. Recs do not have to come from within the community or from the MPTT archive.

Here are the rules:
1. Comment to this post using the following header.

2. You may post your three recommendations in one comment. But you may also make other recommendations in other comments. In other words no more than those three recs per comment. If you do not wish to self-rec, you may leave that part out.
3. All recommendations must be of works based on Tolkien's writings.
4. All recommendations must be family-friendly; if you are not certain, you may check the community guidelines at our sister site, Many Paths to Tread Ratings Guidelines.
Do scroll down; Art guidelines are a bit stricter than written material.
5. Do NOT comment on the comments, even to say you "second" the rec. This is to keep the thread for top level comments only. If your comment has too many words, you may reply to your own comment in order to complete it.

This challenge will run throughout February, beginning today. We hope you will have lots of fun recommending Fandom Favorites!

Rec Challenge - Kaylee Arafinwiel
SELF-REC:

Title of fic or work: Isildurchil Dithen
URL link to story or work: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3493874/chapters/7677008
Rating: Teen +
Content Advisory:
Story Summary:

Shares the premise of Susana Rosa's "Desperate Hours" AU. What if, unknowingly to both father and son, Aragorn was Faramir's true sire?

After Finduilas dies, five-year-old Faramir plans to run away. But he won't get far on his own...until aid unlooked-for comes to him. Adventure calls as he makes his way North in the company of his kinsmen.

Complete or WIP: WIP
Reason for recommendation: I'm hoping to continue this story during B2MEM. I'm rather fond of it. :)

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: Elf Academy 4 - The Unfinished Tales
Author name: Fiondil
URL link to story: http://storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=7434
Rating:
Content Advisory:
Story Summary: The fourth (main) tale in Fiondil's Elf Academy series, and his final work.
Complete or WIP: WIP
Reason for recommendation: I heartily recommend *all* Fiondil's works, but this, his last gift to his readers, is proving to be an enjoyable ride so far. Of course, it's necessary to read the first four Elf Academy tales(including "Christmas at Edhellond") to know what's going on, but I don't think that should be a hardship :)

I have a whole bunch of recs I can make, since Chocolate Box works just went live! Authors and artists are still anonymous.

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: Bittersweet
Author name: Penknife
URL link to story: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/chocolatebox2015/works/5944081
Rating: T
Content Advisory: Major Character Death
Characters: Elrond, Gil-galad
Story Summary: They've always been waiting to see what happened next.
Complete or WIP: complete
Reason for recommendation: This is very beautiful and sad -- bittersweet, as the title says! The writing is beautiful, and I like the way the author portrayed Elrond's character. The structure is unusual, each scene going backwards in time -- it's a difficult thing to pull off, but the author made it flow entirely naturally.

FAN ART REC:
Title of work: My Shelter in the Woods
Artist name: nisiedraws
URL link to work: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/chocolatebox2015/works/5946090
Rating: G
Content Advisory: none
Summary: After everything they've lost, Nienor and Finduilas have found something to hold on to.
Reason for recommendation: I like to think of these two comforting each other. It's a sweet picture, and also I love the lighting and the colors -- it almost looks like stained glass.

(Edited to add the author and artists' names after reveals.)

Title of fic or work: The Wizard in Distress
URL link to story or work: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3217772
Rating: G
Content Advisory: Slash
Story Summary: Saruman discovers that his feelings for Gandalf are more than just friendly.
Characters: Gandalf the Grey, Saruman the White
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: It's my only other LoTR fic, and I really like this pairing. Probably could have been better, maybe I will redo it someday.

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: Walt Disney Presents: The Lord of the Rings
Author name: jules14
URL link to story: http://www.lotrfanfiction.com/viewstory.php?sid=9145&index=1
Rating: G
Content Advisory: None
Story Summary: Exactly what it says in the title: if The Lord of the Rings was adapted for the screen by Walt Disney Pictures instead of Peter Jackson.
Characters: Frodo, Gandalf, Arwen, Aragorn, Sam etc.
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: It's excellently written and really hilarious and on point.

Reason for recommendation: It's so heavy with emotion. And look, it's painted with coffee!

Title of fic or work: Eleventy-one: Too Short a Time, Book One, The First Fifty Years
URL link to story or work: At Ao3:http://archiveofourown.org/works/1080436/chapters/2171491 (I chose this because is has all the lovely art by baranduin and knowmefirst, but it is also posted at Many Paths to Tread, Stories of Arda and FFN.
Rating: PG
Content Advisory: For child-birth, a bit of violence and also for canonical character deaths.
Story Summary: For one-hundred-and-eleven years, Bilbo Baggins dwelt in Bag End, in Hobbiton of the Shire, save for a brief journey into the Wide World. This is the story from his birth until he leaves on his first Adventure.
Characters: Bilbo Baggins and all of his friends and relatives.
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: I had so much fun researching and writing this story of Bilbo, trying to fit in all the events that made him grow up into the hobbit he became, to explain why he seemed so timid to begin with, but to show where the seeds of his courage and mercy came from. I'd love to share my version of how that all came to be.

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: The North-delving Incident
Author name: Dana, AKA danae_b
URL link to story: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewseries.php?seriesid=61
Rating: PG-13
Content Advisory: This takes place in the aftermath of the Ruffian Occupation of the Shire. There are definite implications of non-con, although nothing is actually shown. There is also violence of the sort to be expected of Ruffians, and of hobbits trying to defend themselves.
Story Summary: Three stories from three points-of-view about a village in the Northfarthing where a handful of Ruffians managed to hide for a year, overlooked by the scouring, and terrorizing the villagers...until Pippin arrives, unsuspecting and unexpectedly...
Characters: Pippin, several OCs, and finally Merry...
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: This is quite an exciting adventure for Pippin. It actually consists of three separate stories: the first one, "Overlooked" is from Pippin's POV, as on a visit to the Northfarthing, he stumbles upon North-delving, a village that somehow got missed during the previous year when the Ruffians were driven out of the Shire. A handful of them have been hiding out there, and when Pippin arrives they capture him. Of course, there's much more to the story after, but I don't want to spoil it.
The second story is "Left Undone", in which we mostly see the POV of one of the OCs who help Pippin in the first story, and explains a little more about how the village came to be under the thrall of the Ruffians.
As for the third story, "Following Through", it is, as Dana summarizes it as "The one where Merry finally shows up.", and gives us Merry's POV as he is riding with a few others to meet Pippin, and finds himself unaccountably worried.

If you like a story that is both character and plot driven and you like seeing Pippin being a hero and hobbits being brave, I think you would probably enjoy this one!

I just love this sketch of those three enjoying a moment of friendship together. It's just lovely to see them all smiling. RS9 has a knack for really capturing personality and feeling in her subjects!

Title of fic or work: The Bequest
URL link to story or work: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=3535
Rating: PG
Content Advisory: Warnings for reference to canonical character death (not violent), canonical grief and (very obliquely) to canonical aftermath of torture
Story Summary: After Aragorn's death, Arwen takes leave of one of her daughters
Characters: Arwen Undómiel & one of her daughters
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: Arwen is a character that I don't often write but may be of special interest to this community. I've been told this came out well (also, it's recent)

FANFIC REC:
Title of fic: Let Them Sing Our Praises When We've Gone
Author name: URL link to story: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=3458
Rating: PG13
Content Advisory: 5. mild sexual content, 6. adult themes
Story Summary: Barahir and Emeldir try to hold their ground against the encroaching darkness from the North
Characters: Barahir, Emeldir
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: Two characters who haven't got as much attention as they deserve and really get it here.

Title of work: Yule - Serving Gondor
Artist name: RS 9
URL link to work: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=3538
Rating: G
Content Advisory: no warnings
Description: Serving Gondor - In one of Gondor's soup kitchens. I imagine Gondor having something similar to this and A&A lending a helping hand and providing for those who are less fortunate.
Reason for recommendation: I like the spirit of this--cheerful, charitable and well drawn!

Title of fic: A Dark Doom and a Wandering Wild
Author name: kenaz
URL link to story: http://archiveofourown.org/works/5950042
Rating: G
Content Advisory: none
Story Summary: Beleg is sent to find Luthien and bring her to captivity.
Characters: Beleg, Luthien
Complete or WIP: complete
Reason for recommendation: Another Chocolate Box fic that I think deserves some more love! It makes sense for Beleg and Luthien to have known each other well, and I really like this depiction of their relationship, with Beleg teaching young Luthien to find hiding places in the woods. I like the way this fic shows Luthien's despair and determination (and her bitterness, which is understandable here) and Beleg's divided loyalties.

FAN ART REC:
Title of work: The Great Ring
Artist name: Gerwell
URL link to work: http://www.deviantart.com/art/The-Great-Ring-375319355
Rating: unrated (but SFW)
Content Advisory: none
Description: Sauron forges the Great Ring, and Celebrimbor realizes his deceit.
Reason for recommendation: This shows a dramatic moment from Tolkien in multiple panels as if it were a page from a graphic novel (I'd say a comic, but this is definitely serious in tone and not at all cutesy). There's no dialogue except the Ring verse itself, and everything is conveyed by the characters' changing expressions, but it works -- I think this is really well done. I love the details of Celebrimbor's robe and the bits of fire behind Sauron as he stands in the Sammath Naur.

Story Summary: After spending millennia wandering Middle-earth, Maglor returns to Valinor, where he attempts to adjust to both his Valar-imposed restrictions and living once more with the Eldar.
Characters: Maglor, Elrond, Glorfindel, others
Complete or WIP: Complete at 61,048 words.
Reason for recommendation: It's my favorite fic that I've written.

SELF-REC:

Title of fic or work:Eucatastrophe: The Return
URL link to story or work:http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=2161
Rating: G
Content Advisory: A very little mild violence, not more than you'd find in The Hobbit
Story Summary: In this AU, Frodo has returned from the West and embarks on a new and less perilous adventure.
Characters: Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Sam, Glorfindel, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, and assorted OCs and minor canon characters.
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: This is more or less the set-up for my favorite among my AUs. In this AU two things happened that changed things: Quickbeam actually caught Saruman and killed him in the siege of Isengard and the second one was that just before the last battle before the Gates of Mordor, Gandalf and the other holders of the Three suddenly realized that Saruman had been the source of their belief that the destruction of the One would cause the Three to fade; it was one of his lies. Instead, the Three were all freed to their full potential. As a reward for discovering this, the ban on returning to M-e from the West was lifted.
I wrote the story during Marigold's Challenges, and in each separate part of the story, I had to incorporate various elements into the story. It was loads of fun to write! Many of my readers enjoy this AU a lot, and I have lots of side stories connected to it, including some which were written prior to this one.

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: The Shadow of War
Author name: Rhymer
URL link to story: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=3248
Rating: PG
Content Advisory: War, violence, murder, character death and themes of betrayal
Story Summary: It's fourteen years since the fall of Sauron, and Gondor is at peace. But old enemies are stirring beyond her borders, and some have infiltrated Minas Tirith itself, and are waiting for the time to strike…
Characters: Aragorn/Elessar, Arwen, Faramir, Eowyn, Eomer, Merry, Pippin and an assortment of minor characters and OCs.
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: One of my favorite types of fanfic is the long and plotty adventure, featuring all or most of the Fellowship. There used to be a lot of these once upon a time, but somehow in recent years, shorter stories have come to dominate, and this sort of story is now rare.
But it's not only the genre that appeals, but the way in which Rhymer lays it out: it's both an adventure taking place in Gondor in the early years of Aragorn's reign, but is also interspersed with bits of "history" of people who long after are attempting to analyze what happened "back then", some of which hit close to the mark, others which are totally wrong.
It's written in multiple points of view, which adds to its appeal for me. My favorite POVs are of Merry, Eowyn and one of the OCs.
Not only is it a cracking good yarn, but it is also a shrewd commentary on war and politics that can apply in RL as well as in Fourth Age Gondor.

Title of work: Gandalf Recieves Narya
Artist name: Elf of cave

Rating: G
Content Advisory: n/a
Description: A drawing of Gandalf receiving Narya from Cirdan upon his arrival in M-e.
Reason for recommendation: This is not something that usually is seen in fan art, and I like the expressions on the faces and the matter of fact treatment of the subject.

Title of fic or work: The Choice of Healing
URL link to story or work: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=3579
Rating: PG-13
Content Advisory: Discusses illness, depression, thoughts of suicide and death.
Story Summary: How was Frodo Baggins drawn to his decision to leave the Shire and Middle Earth?
Characters: Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, various Tooks, Brandybucks, Bolgers, and other Hobbits, many canon and some original characters.
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: It's one of my lesser known stories, but one that meant a good deal to me when I wrote it. It discusses Frodo's duties as deputy Mayor as well as how things might well have gone for him during the time he wondered just what his final decision might be.

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: The Trouble with Bracegirdles
Author name: Seafarer
URL link to story: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8387822/1/The-Trouble-with-Bracegirdles
Rating: PG
Content Advisory: Discussions of Frodo's discomforts after his return from the quest.
Story Summary: Two Bracegirdles, relatives of Lobelia's, have plans to see Frodo Baggins marry Belle Bracegirdle, but are not finding either Frodo or his gardener Sam exactly cooperating with their schemes. They just cannot appreciate the reluctance of the deputy Mayor to open up to them....
Characters: Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Hobbits of the Shire, Belle Bracegirdle and her brother.
Complete or WIP: WIP
Reason for recommendation: My own vision of Frodo as deputy Mayor and the acquisitive nature of some of those in the Bracegirdle clan has managed to inspire others, I've realized. I love thinking my own imaginings have managed to spark others to consider just what Frodo as deputy Mayor might have been required to do for the people of the Shire.

Title of fic or work: Reforged
URL link to story or work: http://archiveofourown.org/works/215097
Rating: G
Content Advisory: None
Story Summary: While seeking answers to a troubling dream, Boromir meets someone he had almost forgotten.
Characters: Thorongil/Aragorn, Boromir
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: This is one of my favorites of my own stories, because it satisfies a longing I had about the relationship between Boromir and Aragorn. I once wrote a story exploring that subject, where Thorongil and a two-year-old Boromir discuss broken swords while eating apples together. The story is "The Best Sword Ever" at http://archiveofourown.org/works/215091; it is essentially the forerunner of "Reforged," which refers to memories from "The Best Sword Ever" but takes the story further, and to a different conclusion. I wrote the second story because I was not satisfied with how the first story ended; I realized I wanted Boromir to remember Aragorn as Thorongil, and understand everything that went along with that recognition! I have always thought it intriguing that Thorongil would have known Boromir as a child, and thought it would be fun to contemplate how Boromir might be brought to remember that relationship, and what remembering might mean for his future travels together with Aragorn. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and it has now become a foundational event in my Boromir head canon!

FANFIC REC:

Title of fic: Waiting on the Wise
Author name: Rhymer
URL link to story: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=2804
Rating: PG
Content Advisory: According to the author, contains some non-graphic references to deaths in battle
Story Summary: Boromir endured much hardship on his long journey to Rivendell. What comes after, in the quiet and safety of the House of Elrond, could prove yet harder to endure.
Characters: Boromir, Merry, Pippin (with brief appearances by Gandalf and Elrond)
Complete or WIP: Complete
Reason for recommendation: This story was written in response to one of my own requests, so it is close to my heart because it tells a story I have always wanted to be told. One of my greatest regrets is that Tolkien did not tell us what went on in Rivendell during that period of time between the Council and the setting out of the Fellowship. I have imagined various scenarios of my own, particularly involving Boromir, and I am happy to say that this story fits very well with my own head canon about what might have taken place. It is a beautiful look into Boromir's soul as he struggles with being stuck in the House of Elrond, and the adventure he finds himself in with Merry and Pippin is both humorous and touching.

FAN ART REC:
Title of work: Boromir
Artist name: John Howe
URL link to work: http://www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/details.php?image_id=1700
Rating: G
Content Advisory: None
Reason for recommendation: Besides loving the picture as it portrays Boromir (with the face of the artist), I love what John Howe says as a caption to the artwork: "I may have missed a cameo in the movies, and have bombed out for a cameo on the Decipher cards, but at least I can still put my face somewhere... "

Title of fic: The Lost Dunedain
Author name: KHB123
URL link to story: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10901347/1/The-Lost-Dunedain
Rating: M (Even though the rating is K, there are no graphic sex or violence scenes, although there are swear words. The most graphic scene is the fight scene in the prologue.)
Content Advisory: None
Story Summary: Three siblings are pulled into Middle-earth following the mysterious disappearance of their father. Their only lead in going home is the Lonely Mountain, so they must travel with a hobbit, a wizard, and 13 dwarves to help each other get there. Characters: Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, the Dwarves, Maia Dainson (age 18), Kyle Dainson (age 13), and Lori Dainson (age 5)
