Spammers at the archive

Dear all,

We have suffered two consecutive spam attacks today. We were quick on the mark and locked the spammer accounts as soon as the first violation reports came in. Our moderator Ysilmë has started to delete the reviews and have been in touch with many of you already.

If you have received one or more email notifications alerting you of a new review for one of your works, you may find that the link is no longer working, because the spam reviews have been deleted from the database.

Thank you for the very prompt reports, we ask you to keep alerting us at the mod account if it happens again.

On behalf of the MPTT mod team,

Yeah, I had two bogus reviews on MPTT this morning, and one on SWG. I'm not sure what gets accomplished by their doing that, it seems quite a waste of their time and money.

To get a kick out of it? Or the page clicks/traffic. Bleh.

I explained what comment spam accomplishes here (because this always gets asked whenever we get hit by an attack, and it does make sense ... if you think like a spammer! :)

It comes with a personal beverage alert though, well explained but I also had to holler so hard because of the examples there :D

Like me, you look at a lot of spam! :D So you'll get the jokes. I've actually soured on particular brands that pop up constantly in spam.

Also, somewhat ironically, the proprietor of a microbrewery in Ocean City that Bobby and I adore was recently arrested for Internet fraud. What was he doing? Selling Cheap NFL Jerseys From China. He apparently made quite a bit of money doing it! He could have been spamming us!

I swear I will never be able to look at Boromir again without wondering what he would do with those drugs LOL

And that microbrewery owner... wow, what are the odds!

Thanks for your quick work in dealing with it! I seem to have been spared this round!

I (Rhapsody)am usually not affected because I hardly have any new work up at the archive, but this time I got some spam reviews. :-) But I am happy for you not to receive any of those, they can be such a bummer...

Thanks for taking care of it!

You are absolutely welcome. We blocked the spammer at a higher level too now, so it should become even harder to sign up again.

Interesting to note that ff.net is offline today. I wonder if someone is attacking fanfic archives in general.

In the case of ffnet, I just read the following:

"fanfiction.net is located out in Los Angeles and the area is currently having some power failures. Fanfic location happens to be in one of those areas. They expect to have power back up in locations by 10:30am pacific time. So it shouldn't be too much longer hopefully."

Thanks for that info! I was seeing a plot where there wasn't one. Maybe it comes from being a fanfic writer. ;)

Hehe, I checked some sites when you mentioned it, but OSA is up, AO3 is up, Lotr fanfiction net is still in pretty much the same state... and Faerie seems not to been hit by this spammer (although Faerie mods, if you read this, we do have the IP's to block if needed).

What a hassle. Thank you so much for being there!
