April 2016 Challenge: Riddle Poems

The April Challenge will have the theme "Riddles"; in honor of the fact that April is National Poetry Month, we are asking the participants to try their hand at a riddle in poetic form. Prompts will be a possible answer to a riddle, or you may use it as a word in your riddle; you may decide which way to use it.

A riddle poem can rhyme, like this classic riddle Bilbo asked Gollum, in "Riddles in the Dark"

An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"but in low place
Not in high place."

Or it can be alliterative, like this Anglo-Saxon poem:

Riddle: The Sea Suckled Me
loose translation by Michael R. Burch

The sea suckled me; the wild waves washed me;
I was rocked by breakers in my restless cradle.
Footless but fixed, I opened my wordless mouth to the life-giving floods.
But soon some man will come to consume me,
slip the point of his knife savagely into my side,
slide it down, ripping the flesh from my bones,
then slurp me in raw, smiling as he sucks me down.

It can even be a haiku:

Blue and white flickers
Red and Orange light and warmth
slowly melt away.

Tessa Conte, from Tessa's Blog

Or it can be any other poetic form you choose. You may opt to leave the answer out of your post, and allow your commenters to guess the answers, or you may put your answer at the bottom of your poem if you wish.

The April challenge poems will be due Friday April 22,and will be revealed on Monday, April 25. Please tag your story "challenge: riddles" and "2016 april". Please remember to use the header template below (also found on the community profile page), and to put the name of your story and your name in the subject line.

To request your prompt, please leave a comment to this post. If you have not participated before, please leave an email address so that I can send you your elements. Or you can email the mods at manypaths@lotrgfic.com.com

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our April challenge!

Hi Larner! Sorry for the delay--I thought I'd sent it on, but it was still sitting in my draft folder! You should have it now.
