2016 August Non-fiction Challenge

The August Challenge will once again have the theme "Nonfiction." You will not receive an element for this challenge; rather, we encourage all members to submit essays, research articles, and other nonfictional works related to Tolkien's legendarium. You are free to choose your own topic!

The August challenge entries may be posted in the queue at any time before the reveal, and will be revealed on Monday, August 22.

Please tag your essay "challenge: non-fiction" and "month: 2016 august". Use the following special header for your nonfiction entry: Put "Nonfiction" as the theme, and as "type" indicate whether it is an essay, research, tutorial or other type of nonfiction. Make sure to put the name of your piece and your name in the subject line (e.g. "Sindarin Verbs by Scholar Sue").

To indicate your participation, please leave a comment to this post, or you can email the mods at manypaths@lotrgfic.com. Remember: You do NOT have to wait for a prompt or element.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our August challenge!

Is there a word limit or word expectation? Thanks

No, not at all. The word limit is up to you.

Ok, thanks! =) I may participate. I have two topics in mind.

Look forward to seeing them!

I am going to write something. What, I do not yet know. I have a few in-progress pieces and might try to finish one of them.

However, I will be doing a "Meta on Meta" series on my blog about writing nonfiction and meta about Tolkien, not for the challenge but certainly in honor of it!

Oh, I do hope you get to finish one of your WIPs for it! And links to the blog would be welcome, I think.

Thank you! The house is basically finished, and I'll be going to my classroom to set up at least a few times a week, but otherwise, I hope to have much more free time than I have had. And I'm itching for it!

I got the first blog post almost finished yesterday while struggling to get my conference video uploaded, converted, edited etc etc. \0/

I'm going to be writing an essay about the Maedhros vs Elwing problem. It's probably going to end up being more about how to think about fiction and how to write it than directly about the fictional situation itself, but that will be my example, anyway.

That sounds wonderful!

Oh! Consider me excited for that one! :D

Heh, I've started writing it now after some thinking time, and mainly my thoughts are at the moment, "I really hope this doesn't cause a mountain of wank!" *hides under desk* This is why I usually don't write meta, it's umm, provocative. But hopefully insightful!

I have a lj blog, but mostly to observe other writers, and so my knowledge of how to use the site is very limited. I wonder what should I do with the html code posted in the announcement? Thanks :)

I have an article which was originally written for an academic paper, but it was rejected and the reviewers suggested publishing it in some magazine for Tolkien fans.I wonder if it would be a good idea to post it for the non-fiction challenge? I guess I would have to modify it to make it sound more informal? Thank you for any kind of advice :)

I love reading fanfiction here on this blog, though I am too shy to write my own stories, I feel much more comfortable with non-fiction.

The header is posted already coded for putting at the top of your post.

When you get ready to post your article, simply copy/paste it at the top of it and fill in the information. Be sure to use the HTML option for posting, instead of Rich Text. (Or if you prefer to use Rich Text, simply delete the html tags from the header after you paste them in and before you post.)

We'd welcome your article in our challenge. We have a nice non-fiction section at Many Paths to Tread, so if you have any other non-fic, we'd love to see any of it there.

Not everyone prefers to write fiction, and not every idea works as fiction. Meta is an important facet of fandom, which is why we like to encourage it.

We'll look forward to your entry. Just post it to the community at any time before the deadline, and we will unlock it on the reveal date!

I have a thing or two that I wrote some time ago, which I'll try to brush up to make them presentable -- so I should have at least one piece to share.
