August 2017 Non-fiction Challenge

The August Challenge will once again have the theme "Nonfiction." You will not receive an element for this challenge; rather, we encourage all members to submit essays, research articles, and other nonfictional works related to Tolkien's legendarium. You are free to choose your own topic! (If you have a non-fiction piece previously written, but never posted on LJ, please consider dusting it off for this challenge! I know many of you have written non-fiction for school or other activities, but have never been seen by your fellow fans.)

The August challenge entries may be posted to the queue at any time before the reveal date and will be revealed on Monday, August 21.

Please tag your essay "annual challenge: non-fiction" and "month: 2017 august". Use the following special header for your nonfiction entry: Put "Nonfiction" as the theme, and as "type" indicate whether it is an essay, research, tutorial or other type of nonfiction. The "subject" is the topic of your work. Make sure to put the name of your piece and your name in the subject line (e.g. "Sindarin Verbs by Scholar Sue").

To indicate your participation, please leave a comment to this post, or you can email the mods at manypaths@lotrgfic.com.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our August challenge!

How flexible are you on the non-fiction aspect? I've been thinking about writing a "joys of heterodoxy" piece, on alternate ways of reading Tolkien canon (e.g. as a historical document rather than a fictional manuscript where the author's intentions and wishes might be more relevant) and how that can be rewarding and a meaningful/valid way of interacting with the fandom and source text. But it would probably be more memoir/personal essay than what I'd consider properly nonfiction.

If this would fit I'll try to get off my duff and put something together.

Oh, I think we can be pretty flexible about that! And memoirs and personal essays are a valid form of non-fiction as well.

Look forward to seeing it!

My participation will depend on how I'm doing after knee replacement surgery (happening on 7/20!) -- but since the reveal date is later in August, I should be okay. I'll put my name in and hope I have something to contribute by then!

Good luck on your knee surgery--that's in just a day or two! (((hugs)))

Perhaps your recuperation will give you a little extra time!

I hope everything went well with your surgery!

Yes, it did! I've been in rehab for the last week, and I've progressed enough to go home on Tuesday. There's more work to be done to get fully back on my feet, but I'm on the right path.

Oh, that's wonderful news. I hope that the healing continues to progress well. ^_^

This is, of course, right up my alley, so consider my hat tossed into the ring! :D

Have an idea, and will be working upon it.

I've been encouraged to submit an essay I've written in response to last month's SWG challenge for this one, so I suppose I'll go for that.
