Keep On Living

"Pip!" Merry whispered urgently, keeping his voice low so the surrounding orcs might not hear.  "Are you okay?  Eat your food.  I know it's bad, but we must keep our strength up.  You never know when the chance to escape might come, or when someone might come to our rescue."

"What's the use?" Pippin moaned.  "Boromir's dead!  The orcs killed him!  It's our fault, too.  He was trying to save us and got killed instead.  I feel like giving up..."

"Giving up isn't an option, Pip!"  Merry interrupted.  "That's no way to honour Boromir.  Yes, he died to save us, but if we don't keep on living, his death will be wasted.  Sometimes the best way to honour the dead is to simply keep living."

"You're right, as usual," Pippin sighed.  He grinned sheepishly.  "Thanks, Merry.  I was doing okay at first, but thinking about losing Boromir made me so sad, I started to lose hope.  But that's no good!  Like you said, we have to make a chance for ourselves and stay alive and ready.  It's the best way to honor Boromir."

"That's my Pippin talking!  Now hush, the guard is looking this way.  Eat up, and stay strong!"

When a Hobbit fails to eat, he has indeed given up on life. A wonderful manner in which to honor Boromir.

I really love work in which the special love that Merry and Pippin had for Boromir is showcased. This one is quite hobbity, and shows the practical way in which they can honor their fallen friend.

ETA: to add back the "y" on hobbity, that the spellcheck took out.

It's good to think of those two encouraging each other and honouring Boromir's sacrifice in this way!

This is a nice scene. Thank goodness Pippin had Merry by his side.
