I like both self-prompting *and* having the prompts mailed, actually :)

I suppose I should have put both in the poll! But we'll keep that in mind. We already do that to a certain extent, with the Potluck and the Yule Exchange, and occasionally other challenges.

I went for having the pompt mailed but that's because I had to pick one - either works for me.

Has anyone considered promoting the challenges on Tumblr? So many people formerly on LJ are over there now and don't often check LJ/DW.

That's a very good idea--except I don't think any of us mods are familiar with Tumblr and how it works.

If we should decide to do that, would you be willing to help us out?

My Tumblr footprint is tiny, but you're welcome to any help I can give. The SWG has a presence over there, Dawn or one of her mods could advise/assist too, I'm sure. Basically you'd just need to start a Tumblr for the community and get as many people as you can to reblog/promote it.

I 'd love a return of the "Tree and Flower" awards or something similar. Contests are an encouragement to write stories. I've no idea if my lost Muses will ever return but I voted for what I'd enjoy reading if they don't. I'd be happy to promote challenges on my LJ.

Thank you! We always can use a signal boost!

The "Tree and Flower" awards were a lot of work, and right now our mod pool is small. It's possible that once we find another tech mod, we might be able to start the T&F up again.

Would love to write and comment and promote too and always have loved LotR community challenges!
I like canonical gapfillers to read and write the most.

I voted self-prompting because it would be less work for the mods. Otherwise I'm happy with either.
I also don't mind Art Challenges and would be happy to comment on them. I just can't do them myself, so I voted no.

Seconding Keiliss that I don't think it's the nature of the challenges but the fact that you all are only getting the word out on LiveJournal. Dreamwidth would reach a bigger audience; Tumblr would reach even more.

Tumblr isn't hard to learn either if all you want to do is to post stuff. Make your post and tag it tolkien, lord of the rings, the hobbit, and silmarillion, and you will get new takers. You guys come up with great challenges, but they could be the best in the fandom and it wouldn't matter if no one knows about them or they require posting to a platform (LiveJournal) that many of us have ethical objections to using.

I don't have strong feelings on whether the prompts are self-chosen or mailed, but there was no "either is fine" option. :) With art, I can't make art myself but I'm happy to see other people make art.

The biggest difference for me personally would be to have the prompts cross-posted on Dreamwidth (and ideally the possibility of posting challenge entries there as well). I unfortunately don't check LJ anymore -- I only knew about this poll because it was posted in Middle-earth News.

I don't use Tumblr myself, but many people do, and I agree that participation would likely pick up by posting there.

Song prompts would be neat!

Also, I keep forgetting to check LJ. Is there a Dreamwidth mirror for this community?
