The April 2010 Challenge: Non-fiction

In a recent discussion, several members indicated they would welcome a non-fiction challenge. And since thoughtful non-fiction essays and research on all things Tolkien are always to be welcomed, we would like to invite you to submit a non-fiction piece as your entry to the April Challenge.

We will assign no theme or element-- write your essay or research or informative article on whatever topic you choose. We ask only that it be focused on Tolkien or his world, and not merely a rant of likes or dislikes.

The April challenge essays will be due the weekend of Friday, April 16, and will be revealed on Monday, April 18. Please tag your piece "non-fiction".

We will have a special header for this challenge only, which we are posting here:

Please copy and paste this heading at the top of your story:

You do not need to request an element, but please leave a comment to this post if you think you would like to participate, or if you have any questions.

I hope we'll have lots of participants for our April challenge!

Oh dear... I am not sure if thi is wise, but I do think it's easier to write non-fiction for me right now, so prompt me.

Oh my! You can write about whatever moves you-- perhaps you could write about First Age singers? *wink*

First age writerssingers (no Maglor, not a special essay about you, eager muses) it is.

I'm not sure if I'll have the time for it, much less the resources (since I don't have all of HoM-E and I'd need it to do this, and none of the libraries have it in my area either), but I'm certainly going to try!

I have all of HoMe, if there's something particular you need me to look up for you. Or you could try inter-library loan.

*rubs hands*

I'm not sure it's appropriate for me to post this year, so feel free to delete, but I find the LOTR-Research Group really helpful in these situations.

Nautika, that's fine for you to post it here, and thank you! I just joined!

Oh, I know I could try Interlibrary Loan... I'd just really like to have the convenience of being able to flip through all the volumes and get copies made, compare things, etc., in one fell swoop.

But I'll send you an email so if you have any ideas you can pass them along to me. You will be very, very amused by the topic, I think!

I also have all of Tolkien's books on e-book and am happy to share. ;)

Hmm... I am Lawful Good, but I might have to take you up on that. I'm maxing out my library's ILL right now as it is. Plus this way I can use that mighty fine "text search" which can sometimes even trump indices!

*gives beady-eyed look* I make no promises.

*nudges very gently and cautiously*

See, with the recent workplace drama and refinancing our mortgage, I'm afraid I'd come across considerably snarkier that I'm willing to do in a public forum.

(((hugs))) I have faith in you, whatever!
Mar. 17th, 2010 03:36 am (UTC)
I've always wanted to try this, but I wish there were guidelines somewhere. :D
Mar. 17th, 2010 09:50 pm (UTC)
Awesome! Thank you!

Heh. Here's the cumbersome title of a potential non-fiction piece that has been rattling around in my ol' noggin for quite some time:

Writing Fan Fiction in Tolkien's Mythopoeia: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying about Canon and Love the Mythology.

All I have to do is come up with the just-short-of-a-screed text to go with it. ;^)

So maybe. I think. ;^)

*grin* Should be a lot of fun!

Wow, there are some great resources offered here - thanks, guys!! I just posed the question on the group regarding help with writing non-fiction and I'm appreciative of what's already been posted here. That said, I'd love to give it a try, Barbara, if classes and RL woes cooperate.

I hope that you do get the time! There are a lot of things you can say in an essay that you can't in a story. (And vice-versa, which is why I love both.)
Mar. 23rd, 2010 03:48 am (UTC)
I've been working on a non-fiction for some time now. One thing or another has prevented me from finishing it. If I can get it done by deadline, I'd like to submit it.
Mar. 23rd, 2010 12:27 pm (UTC)
That would be lovely! (((hugs)))
Apr. 2nd, 2010 02:35 am (UTC)
With my life being what it is right now, I can't make any guarantees, but I am really hoping to be able to make time for this challenge! :)
Apr. 7th, 2010 03:02 pm (UTC)
((hugs)) I *hope* you can! Maybe you will have a little more time now that the End of the World is all settled...
Apr. 7th, 2010 02:48 pm (UTC)
When is this due? I'd like to give it a shot. I write character bios every month for the SWG, but I am always thinking of other things I would like to write.
Apr. 7th, 2010 03:01 pm (UTC)
It's due before the 18th of April. Of course, we also accept late entries, but that will be the day submissions are revealed.

Most people post to the community during the weekend preceding the reveal, but you can post earlier if you like.
Apr. 7th, 2010 03:05 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! That's exciting. Can't wait to see what people post. And I hope I can write something myself. (Trying to think of a topic somewhat different than my usual Silmarillion ramblings.)
