Summer Comment Challenge: Scavenger Hunt!

We had so much fun with our Spring Comment Challenge that we are trying it again! This time there's a little twist!

The Mods at Many Paths to Tread  (this community's archive) would like to announce our Summer Comment Challenge. This comment challenge will be a scavenger hunt! You  find a story with one of the following elements in it. You  then leave a comment for the author at Many Paths to Tread , and when you have found your items, you then post to the group. Do comment on the story, and not just on the item you find! You may set your own goals of finding 6, 8, 10 or 12 of the items on the followng list:

1. A harp
2. A ring that is NOT a Ring of Power
3. A goblet
4. A scabbard
5. A ribbon
6. A boot
7. A pan (or a pot)
8. A book (or scroll)
9. A stone
10. A baby
11. A horse (or pony) mentioned by name
12. Clouds

If you locate six of the items, you are a sharp-eyed Ranger.
If you locate eight of the items, you are an expert Elven archer.
If you locate ten of the items, you must be looking through a palantir.
If you locate all twelve of the items, you are proclaimed to be a Lord of the Eagles!

Those who reach their goals will get a special banner!

The challenge begins now, and will run until July 31! We hope everyone will have fun trying this out!

The mods.

Oh, that is brilliant. :)

I hope you'll play!

BTW, it was Dawn's idea!

That sounds fun! I'll give it a go.

Actually, I could cover quite a few of these with some of my own stories, but I suppose that doesn't count...

That's true. They have to be from *others*! LOL!

Actually, one of the things we mods figured was that if many of those elements could be found in *our* own stories, then they probably were in other people's too-- we tried for things that would be interesting, but common enough for people to actually *find*!

I'm curious. Is the sheath the same as a scabbard and a tome the same as a book?

What a neat idea! I hope to be able to give this a go.

If 'sheath' can be substituted for 'scabbard', I've found all 12. If not, I need to keep looking. I still have over a month to look for scabbard, but I couldnt help but ask.

To me, it seems that "sheath" in the context of something that holds a sword seems synonymous with "scabbard." ("Sheath" is even part of the definition of "scabbard"! :) So it seems reasonable to me that it should count.

Comods, what say ye? :)

Sounds fine to me!

Okay, I have 12. I only set my goal for 10, but when I found 'harp', I decided the others couldn't be that hard to find! :D

This challenge was almost obsessional for me. I'd like to see it done again, but not *too* often. lol

That's great! Congratulations!

What if we find a story with one of the required items, but don't like the story? I've just spotted one of the items in a rather long fic, but having read the first page, I really don't want to read any more.

Don't feel obliged to comment on a story just because it has an item. We tried to choose things that might show up in a number of stories-- things that might not be common, but should not be terribly *UN*common either, so I'm sure you can find it in another story, whatever it is!

We want this to be fun, not a chore! And it's not fun to read something you don't like.

Yikes! July 31st? I better catch up fast!! Some of you have been very, very busy scavenging... *Cathleen scurries away to read more*
